Axle shaft bearings?
It appears I have a bad bearing on the drivers side axle shaft. It feels very loose and has a lot of lateral play. What do I replace on this unit?
Can I remove the housing that bolts to the brake plate and replace the bearing(s) inside or do I need to replace the entire unit? Car is a 63 Lemans Convertible. Last edited by AzMike; 09-26-2018 at 06:37 PM. |

The axle bearings are a complete unit. Never heard of putting a new bearing into an old housing, but that doesn't mean it has not been tried. Search other posts on here for discussions.
The only available axle bearings that interchange are ones from a Corvair or NOS ones on ebay. Try Clark's Corvair Parts. |

I got in the new bearings from Clarkes Corvair Parts. They are not identical to what is in there now. The existing bearings are, I assume, are not original either because they appear to be sealed bearings. The new ones need to be greased. I got the housing off the shaft. Now I need to press the old bearings out and replace them with the new ones. Wish me luck.

The 63 models did have sealed bearings. The 61-62 models had bearings like you received from Clark's. You will need the housings from the 61-62's for these to work. If your car is a 63, you need sealed bearings from the later model corvair.

I ordered the bearings listed in the referenced link below. I realize now I only got the bearings themselves, but not the seals, shims, clips or the 2 outer covers like are pictured in the other thread. Should I have ordered a "kit" instead of just the bearings?
I'm getting extremely frustrated w/ working on this car. Everything is 7 days away with parts. It's like working literally at a snails pace to get anything done. |

Ok lesson learned. When ordering from Clarkes Corvair Parts, order the rebuild kit9 don't know the Pn) not just the bearing (Pn C11750).
Just more time and money. |

Hang tough
It is frustrating working on the ropeshaft Pontiacs, because of the lack of replacement parts, but they can be repaired. Just takes more time and research.
I have been told the correct rear axle bearings that interchange on the 1963 Tempest models are the 1963-1967 Corvair bearings. Hang in there!! |
