Had my 95 lincoln in for service at the local FORD dealer a couple of weeks ago and tonight received a nastygram from State Farm Ins. SF is concerned from the info they received from FORD, that I'm driving my car more than the national average. 2nd time this has happened, same car and same dealer both times.

Your info is out there because of companies like Car Fax. When they do a used car information report they somehow get body shop info as well as service info. Dealers must be reporting everything on their customer base to some info mining company. So your insurance company is also privy to the info for a subscription fee.

I was wondering how the ins companies were going to try and control vehicles without GPS, now I know. Last year my lincoln had 105,000 it now shows 235,000 FORD failed to mention that they installed a used gauge cluster in my car. I got some splaining to do tomorrow.

Does the insurance company ask for your mileage every year?

If you had it inspected many states now require that the basic information on the vehicle be sent to DMV via computer. From there Insurance companies have access to it.

Of course the states charge these companies for DMV access. They are both in business together to take our money, and watch everything we do ... so they can make more money.

Most insurance companies will ask you when you get the policy how far you drive to work each day etc. They base your premium on your estimated mileage each year. Of course a person that drives 40,000 miles a year is statistically more likely to have an accident than someone that drives 20,000 miles. If they don't ask you about your mileage habits, they base your premium on the national average, if you exceed that by a lot, they will want to adjust your premium accordingly.

It's going to be a very ugly future for people driving cars. In ten years or so it will be VERY MUCH the "privilege" they have been telling you it is since high school.

I drive 500 miles a week to work and back, so I have my 95 lincoln and a 99 lumina for backup, I usually split the mileage between the two. I've been with State Farm for over 30 years, they insure everything I own, every few years they get exited about how much I'm driving and request odometer statements. I have both cars insured for under 18,000 per year per vehicle. Before I bought the lincoln the instrument panel went out at 76,640 and a used unit that showed 193,097 was installed by the same FORD dealer, it now has 236,808. I've driven it 43,111 miles in exactly 3 years. I explained all of this when I bought the car in 10-24-15, but now I have to go down there and do it again.

I'm with State Farm too ... I just wish they would stop calling me trying to get me to buy more homeowners.

This thread is a prime example as to why I would never plug one of those things the insurance companies offer you for free to "improve" your driving into my OBD2 port.

This is nothing new, has been going on a long time and I have first hand proof of that. Back in 1991 I took my '88 Fiero GT to a Pontiac dealer to fix a problem. The dumbass service writer wrote or swagged the wrong mileage down on the R.O. The dealer damaged the car (whole other story) and it needed to go back to get fixed the right way. This time the service writer wrote down the correct mileage, which happen to be less than they wrote down the last time. No big deal right? After all, its 1991.

Fast forward to 2005. I was the first dealer in the country to sign up with a new company called Autocheck. Just for chits & giggles I wanted to see if they could do an old car, so I ran the VIN on my '88 GT. It came back as "Mileage Discrepancy" and "Possible Odometer Tampering". I was and still am pissed to this day and there is not a damn thing I can do about it. Luckily, I saved all my paperwork that proves the dealer's F'up but that does me no good because people these days have closed minds and will only believe what they see on the internet.

So basically, if I ever go to try and sell my '88 GT, I'll get screwed and it all dates back to inaccurate 1991 records.
