Default Tail Light Socket Wiring

Hello,

My brake lights are always on when the key is in either accessory or run. Turn signals work. Running lights work when key is in off, and knob is pulled 1/2 way.

This problem started when I installed new sockets (I think). Could I have wired them backwards? Attached are two photos, one of the driver's side and one of the passenger side.

Do they look like I switched up the black and white wires?

First, look under your dash where the brake light switch contacts the brake pedal arm. Unplug one of the 2 wires and see if the brake lights go off. If yes, make sure the switch is properly adjusted. The switch could also be shorted. Don't make it to complicated until you get the easy stuff confirmed.

Good luck!!

Understood, but if I fiddle with the passenger socket just right, the tail lights / brake lights function normally. So, I think I have a grounding issue with the repop sockets.

I have read that is common, and some suggested I order an early '70s Ford Torino pair, which are all metal housing, fit 1-1/8" openings, and accept 1157 bulbs. I did for $12 a pair, and should have them later today.

If wires are reversed, the 1157 bulb would be brighter with running light and a dimmer turn signal brake light, correct?

Unhook a wire and see if it was being used for ground instead of the metal socket being grounded. Then hook that back up and try the other wire. See what happens..

Thanks Bill!

I either need a spring to bring the pedal up the last 1/16" or I need a brake light switch that has a longer than normal threaded part so I can run it in more.

My back is killing me from being upside down under the dash fooling with it.

Default another hint...

..i know my 64 lemans had issues all the time with bulb sockets falling out of rechromed tail-light housing...so i bought new modern 1157 sockets with a ground wire, a third wire i believe...then i simply ran them all together to a nice clean body ground in the trunk sheet metal and NEVER had a ground issue with sockets if one got knocked out of housing...the other all still worked...
