Are spreaders used for all 8 valve cover bolts on a 66 326 ?

Yes. And I also use them to support the oil pan flange.

Always wondered why no one made, or at least I haven't seen them, load spreaders along this line for uses in various locations. This one I drew up is 2" long ... but length, depth etc. could be changed for different applications. Something that would really spread the load instead of just bend. This one is 1/2" thick ... so obviously different bolts would have to be used.

Cost. You'd have to cast or extrude that part. The stamped steel ones are cheap as dirt to make.

I could machine those pretty easy from solid aluminum. Wouldn't be cheap though. Although I could do the prints and have them made 100 at a time for probably $5 each.
Without the fillet on the top outside edge, would take 15 minutes on the mill and the drill. Maybe I'll make one and post the results. |

Did up a quickie design and priced it.
Part seen below can be done for $3.25 each if ordered in a batch of 100. With a bit of tweaking I'd guess a finished product could be made for around $4.00 each .... perhaps up to 4" wide, and like this example 1/2" thick 6061 aluminum. Finish would be plain aluminum so the end user might have to polish them a bit if they wanted something fancy. Would probably be plasma cut or water jet, so edge finish might be less than perfect, if milled would be better. |

I don’t think Pontiacs we’re equipped with spreaders OEM.
As regards the CAD design ... man overboard! You are merely clamping down a sheet metal or cast aluminum valve cover. The thin “spring” style ones work fine and are only needed on valve covers already distorted from over tightening. |

Yep, in general, take your old valve cover and a good flat surface, pound out the distortion and don't over tighten the bolts and you are good to go. No need for spreaders if you have a good gasket, and an undistorted valve cover.
No excuse at all for cast valve covers to leak, they are very rigid. |

Can't make it to stiff they will deform the valve cover edge.They need to be made of some grade of spring steel so there is a way of seeing the load put on the edges of the spreader.
