Painted the frame and core support of my LeMans in my garage. When running my hand over the dried paint, some spots are super smooth and the finish looks perfect. In other spots, the paint feel like 120 grit sandpaper. I'm thinking a few things might have occurred-

- I didn't apply enough paint
- It dried too quickly
- Overspray settled

When painting, it all appeared to have that thick wet coat as it went down. There was never any indication there might be a problem, except when I came back around for 2nd wet coat, the parts seemed to be almost dry already. ?? I've painted with "lesser" paints, (Rustoleum, Krylon, etc) in a wide range of temperature and humidity, with better results. This Martin Senour paint seems to be much more sensitive to conditions for some reason IMO.

The core support was done many weeks ago, but the same thing happened, twice. The first time I just presumed I didn't put on enough paint, so sanded with 400 and painted it again. Same issue occurred, but not always in the same areas. Conditions similar -

75 degrees
30% humidity

Anyone else run into this? Any idea how to resolve? I don't think its the paint as many have used it with good results. I believe its me or my conditions, just don't know which.

BTW - Pic just reminds me of how much work I've got to do again........it doesnt show anything pertinent to the problem

Epoxy needs to be scuffed with a green scrubbie if it sits more than 40 hours. The martin paint is more sensitive, but you can help by using a clear adhesion promoter. Good luck !

Could be dirt,dust,sand,it's amazing what can blow out while painting.water,oil,overspray,If it bothers you you will have to repaint.Good luck.

WOW that garage is clean! The frame looks great in the pic. Once you get the engine in there and everything attached you won't notice that many imperfections in it. I had my core support and inner fenders powder coated, it matched the rattle can firewall real good. You painting the car?

Ha, thanks! Can never be too clean. Good point on not really noticing the small things..I struggle with that. Im in there for the first time in 21 years redoing everything, and I keep telling myself to do it all "right" now, but wondering, who is ever really going to notice? Me, sadly....every time I look at it. Every time I'll see nothing but flaws. Its a sickness we all have in varying degrees.

Really though, I do expect to regularly clean the bay and with any sort of paper type towel, it'll get torn up pretty good. Cant have that!! I'll try buffing it out first. Maybe it is dirt or over spray. Worst case, I end up having to repaint it all and I'll look into the adhesion promoter.

Not painting the car just yet. It will stay the flat black/gray until I find the last 2 NOS pieces to complete my collection, then I'll tear it down and rebuild the body. Might pull the frame out at that time, but would have to cut off the roll bar out to do it. Something for me to think about between now and then.

When Im done with the engine bay, it will go together pretty fast. I'll generate a thread here with all the work I've been putting in when Im a bit further along. All systems are either getting rebuilt with some serious quality parts, or have been totally redesigned for the extra power the new engine brings. Its been an interesting 4 years.

I've got everything else, except the roof. And I don't really want a roof.

front bumper? (Dont remember. Gotta rifle through boxes to see!)

I wonder how many people, in the world, are waiting for a 73-75 Lemans NOS RH front fender to come up for sale

Still makes me sick to my stomach when I think about the one that was at spring Carlisle.
