Lost another musical icon from the 60's.

That's awful to hear. He was a innovator of the guitar and will be missed. I've been waiting for his tour to come back east to go see him.

In 2012 an audio commercial was built for my business by my brother, who owns an editing company. It was run on local radio and was also on my website. I wanted background music in the spirit of the Dick Dale sound. An original piece was put together and recorded by a musician in the SoCal area. A wonderful friend of my brother, a man named Doug Paul (the voice of Jos. A. Bank, WGN, etc.) did the voice. When Mr. Paul suddenly passed away a couple of years ago, I pulled the audio clip from my site out of respect for his family.
If anyone would like to hear it, shoot me an email address. I think you'll agree it sounds like Dick Dale on guitar.

Here is a good read and video about Dick Dale.

I was a 'rocker' in my youth, influenced by my 4 older siblings with an ear towards zeppelin, stones, beatles, alice cooper, etc. etc. Never cared for the beach boys or even surf music. I thought it was too tame. As I got older my appreciation for all music has grown, even including disco! I love the old surf tunes. I also like to watch the old surf movies from the early 60's, couple of them even have Dick playing the music on the beach. Cool stuff.

Growing up in so cal I was lucky to be able to see him often. There were many "coffee houses" in and around the Orange county area and they would tour them all.For the last many years he would appear at a place call the Coach House in San Clemente.Wish I would have taken in one of his last appearance there.Tom

I saw Dick Dale a few times here in Milwaukee. One of loudest shows I ever saw. Glad I had ear-plugs! There were a bunch a guys asking him stupid questions about surfing after his show and I asked him about his guitar gear and his face lit up! He really enjoyed telling me how everything was set up. I enjoyed it too! Got his autograph. What a great guy! RIP

I regret never getting to see him play. I was always a big fan.

I saw him at the Hot Rod Power Tour. I believe it was 1999. Good show but he didn't play any of his car songs. Funny how the Rolling Stones hang in there. They all look like they died a long time ago.

Many years ago I got hip to Albert King. I then realized licks I heard Clapton, Page, Dickey Betts, and many other guitarists were playing were copped from Albert.

Same thing with Dick Dale..... licks I have heard many guitarists use are actually copped from Dick Dale! He seemed like quite a character.

I saw on the news the other day that many left handed guitarists, like Dick, would restring a right handed guitar, so they could play it. Dick just played it upside down....

As a guitar player at first that sounds kinda incredible, but if that's how he learned to do it, its no big deal. My son whom is a much better player than myself, is a lefty. I made him learn right handed. He is now glad I did.

Albert King also played lefty with an upside down righty, not restrung for lefty. Bent notes down, not up.

One of my all time favorites.. Sounded great in my 64 421 GP, cruising up Cemetery Lane with the reverb on..

I saw him at the Cabooze in Minneapolis around 1995-6. So innovative for his time.
