Another street RA V engine done
Got the engine on the pump today.Diff kind of dyno.NOT a sweep type unit.you dial in the number to start and end the pull.We made 29 pulls today starting at 2000 RPMs and made them every 500 rpms untill 6000 and then a final at 6200.
Stock factory V heads,intake and carb.780 holley.Told this type of dyno is stingy.It made 509 HP@6000 and best TQ was at 4000-5000@488.434 CI,9.5 CR on 91 Chevron gas.Cam was a comp hyd roller lobes number 13450 and 3123 233-246@50 391 and 400 lobe lift with 1.65 H&S.On a 113 straight up.It like 36-38 best,backed up to 34-35 made 500@6000.4.9-5.0 BSFCs.No carb spacer. Except for the headers exactly like it will go in the 69 bird.Seemed like it was held at the peak RPM of each pull for about 7-9 sec.Scat 4in crank,Molnar rods,autotec pistons.303 std deck block.Going to retard the cam a couple degrees as it pump 200.The dyno headers were 2 1/8 in which I was told hurt the TQ numbers.Broke it in with 20-50 breakin oil and after 21 pulls changed to oil to 10-30 Mobile 1 and a filter change.Should get it in the car in a few weeks and then off to the header shop.Now I have to figure out my next project.Leaning toward a 383CI short deck V engine.Tom |

First time I have ever used that intake lobe.My guy at Comp talked me into it.Because its a new dyno I just dont know where im at with numbers.I had figured 1.2 HP per CI but it fell a little short.Wont make any diff as when it gets in the car it wont see 3000 much.Tom

Was it a Land and Sea Dyno?
How about a RAIV 455. I've read it was possibly considered by Pontiac. Woulda been a monster! Take any pictures?

It is a huge old dyno made in England.Van Dyne Engineering.They build sprint car engines.They do tons of Offy engines.I have cell phone pics I need to figure out how to post.Really nothing special looking.I think I made more pulls on this one engine than I have made total on all my others.29 dyno sheets.I have a 301 turbo block,a set of 303 RA V heads and a factory RA V X ram intake that might get a stroker crank for 383 CI.Tom

May I ask where the dyno shop is? I'm in SoCal too, so I like to make a list of places that I may be able to use one day.

Didn’t Pontiac do a couple prototype r/a VI, VII engines based on a 428 shortblock?

They never released one bigger than 400.They did offer some 4in stroke and 4.21 stroke 3in main cranks.I have owned both.Tom

Because im old and drive my cars from off idle to 2000-2200 and shift and they are geared to drive on the highways at 2000-2200.If I have to kick it 3000 usually gets the job done.That why I pretty much use small cams and build them to run on our CA piss gas.Tom

Years ago there was a state inspection station next to the MacDonalds I was getting lunch at. There was a orange 69 Bird there in the bay so I stopped in and looked at it. Had Judge type stripes on the fenders and a RAV in it. Owner was shocked I knew it was a RAV. It was on the Gay Pontiac guys built for themselves with what he said was a 428 short block.
