Narrowed 9" without tubbing?
Looking to put a 9" under my 65 Tempest and am trying to figure out if it will be worth it to go ahead and do the mini tub. Lots more to doing the mini tub for sure. Currently running a 235/55/17 on a 8"-4" BS rim and really don't have the clearance on the outer lip to go any larger. If the 9" is narrowed 2" overall that should be enough room to run a 255/50/17 and still fit in the stock wheel well. Replacing the trunk floor and inner and outers so now is the time if its going to get done. Anyone running a narrowed rear without the body mods? If so, what size rears are you running?

Are you trying to keep the same wheel or is it an option to just adjust your wheel width and offset to position the wheel/tire in the wheel well better?
Replacing the wheels would be easier and cheaper than swapping the rear, but if you want to re-gear the car or add limited slip then it would make more sense to buy a new rear end and set the width based on the wheel/tire combo you want to run. It is tight, but I am running a 275 tire on 67 GTO with no body mods, I would think a 65 should be able to fit something close to that without mini tubs? |

67 GTO with 255/45 17 on an 8" rim with 5.5 back space on all 4 corners with stock rear, no clearance issues

I really like the rims I have, but the back space on them is causing issues. Going to go the 9" route due to torque "500+" of a new motor and a gear change. The BOP 10 bolt I have is a 3.90 and going to drop it to a 3.70, maybe even a 3.50 in the 9".

I narrowed the Ford 9 in my ‘64 GTO that was already installed in the car when I bought it to precisely center the wheel/tire combo in the wells. I was able to stuff a 10x28 slick on an 15x8.5” Centerline without doing anything other than a little light hammering on the inside inner fender tub. I too liked the rear wheels so I modified the axle housing to put the wheels where I wanted them. Later on I went to custom built steel wheels built to similar dimensions to the Centerlines I replaced. https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=526735

I have 275/60/15 MT ET drag radials in stock wheel wells on my 65. It's tight, but works at least for straight line stuff. Probably too tight for road race or auto cross type stuff.

Thanks, b-man, that tread helped out. Looks like an inch per side will get me where I can set it down over the tire some. Running a 235/55/17 back there now and would like just a bit more.
