I have know I have two options for motor mounts stock and Butler Solid and I know the difference.
Question is this I have a built 421 that is a stump puller.. 490hp and 530 ft lbs if trq, behind it is a 4 speed.. So question is solid or stock.. |

What car is it in? How much does it weigh? And what are you going to do with it? Street or street occasional strip, I would go with stock. If lots of strip time in the future, solid.

I am building a similar engine for a 62 Catalina, 4-speed. I will be using stock style rubber mounts with some type of secondary safety cable or chain just in case of failure. I don't want all the vibration and harshness of solid mounts.

The torque and the 4 speed is not a full on problem until you hook up real well or if you will be dumping the clutch at 5k rpm.
None the less I would do a search here to see what others have done when using stock type mounts to limit engine roll over.

use a short piece of chain or i make a piece of tubing with rod ends on each end for a torque limiter

Anyone that is contemplating solid motor mounts needs to look at a picture of a Pontiac block upside down to see that the 2 bolt motor mount location transmits all the twisting force to only one of the main bulkheads, #3. By looking at the early 2 bolt mount location, and the added strength of the later 3 bolt mount system it's obvious why Pontiac engineers redesigned the mounting system for higher torque applications with the advent of the 455 in 1970.
It's been determined in some instances to cause the failure of the cast iron on this location on stock blocks. Pontiac redesigned their mount system on the latter 455 applications to 3 mounting points and using #2 and #3 bulkheads for superior strength. I personally have used a engine restraint system since the mid 70s, consisting of a turn buckle attached to the left cylinder head and the frame, and still use the OEM mounts successfully in conjunction with the restraining link. This completely removes the stress to only the #3 main bulkhead area. It makes me sleep better at night with the improved system of restraining the engine.
