1965 GTO Air Cleaner Foam Support
A fellow GTO acquaintance prompted me to show this foam support of the air filter for the 1965 GTO four barrel cars. My blue charcoal GTO still had this but I never saw one before. I was told the foam that wrapped around it didn't last and the one piece element replaced it soon after. Did 1966 cars have this part or did they already switch to the one piece filter?

I’ve never seen that style of support for the old foam filters.
Below is the support screen that was in a box of goodies when I purchased my ‘65 GTO. It’s the exact same construction as the Tri-Power screens. You may want to consult with the GTO experts on this site.

I think what I have is a well intentioned and constructed piece of folk art. Nice to see that sometime back when, someone took the time and effort to make it.

1965 GTO air cleaner foam support
The spring support is the correct original that came with my 65 GTO with foam stretched over it. As I am an original owner, I replaced it with a paper element along time ago as the foam wasn't available then. I am sure I can still find it.

Canby, thank you for providing the pictures and information. It's very helpful especially coming from an original owner. Hopefully some others can provide information to.

Canby, I was wondering if these wire style foam supports came from a specific plant location(s) or month. My car was built in March 1965 at the Pontiac Michigan plant.
Any chance your GTO has the same assembly plant and date build?

This certainly upsets the apple cart of something that was thought to be gospel! Exciting!

Interesting, I never would have guessed that was a factory installed part. Perhaps they ran out of the normal supports and they dove into the seat spring supply and made them to work. My original '67 support is more like what Chris shows above.

Interesting Indeed.
You would think the "Spring" design went away quickly due to allowing deteriorating foam element pieces to get sucked into the carb and the full screen came into play?
Just guessing here.

Do you remember if the original GM foam had any script on it ?

My GTO was built Jan 9,1965 in Kansas. As far as I know you can't get the foam filter anymore and so I used the paper filter that doesn't use the spring support.

Hi Gary,
I thought your ‘65 Blue Charcoal was a “second week of February” out of the PON Plant.

Foam Filter Support
This is an interesting topic on the factory foam supports used in the early to mid-60’s.
As I mention above the 64-66 GTO foam supports were made of a “Screen” for the Tri-Power and the 4 BBL. as the MPC shows screen, not spring wire. When I purchased my ‘65 GTO from the Original owner there was a box in the trunk with items that had been removed from this car decades earlier including the air filter “Screen” that I show. Also the air cleaner base of my car shows service instructions stating screen for A 98 C filter and again shown in the MPC with the Screen. It’s quite possible GM used various foam supports back in the day for a mass produced automobile. My GTO is an 11A Baltimore built.
