Default Something you don’t see everyday

Found this 58 air cleaner in a box the other day, luckily I have friends that told me what it was, thought I would post a few pics since I could not find any.

Some guy that has a 58 with tri-power would love to have that part for their car.

I had a 60 with a very similar air cleaner assembly, you don't run across them very often. They were even scarce when these car were still daily drivers, and finding a replacement air cleaner element in a parts store was tough too.

Neat piece. It differs from this 1958 Tri-power air cleaner however..

I wonder if that might be for a J2 olds. or a tri-power 348 then? Only other Pontiac would possibly be a 57 because it looks to have 3 of the small carbs. instead of small center, and 2 large end carbs.

The original 1958 tripower aircleaner had two snorkels, and if I remember correctly, short stacks.

The original 1957 tripower aircleaner had the tall stacks, as pictured, two snorkels, and the starburst lid.

The 1961 SD tripower aircleaner had no snorkels, but had 7 oval indents like the picture.

I have no data suggesting that Pontiac offered the aircleaner sans snorkels for the small carbs (1957, 1958).

Would guess this unit originally was a 1957 unit that has been modified for racing.

Edit: looked again at the pictures, the lid appears to be chromed, which did not happen until the early 1960's.

Jon.

This is all new to me, a few had called it a nascar air cleaner, as far as Oldsmobile, I thought that too, but did notice Oldsmobile lid have front stamped on it

Nice. In around 1990 my uncle's(by marriage) brother asked us to sell a air cleaner for him. It came off his '58 Impala Convertible that his then GF rolled. It was a Tri Power air cleaner. I think it was probably a 348. It was taken off in '59 and stored in his basement. We sold it for him in Hemmings for $900 back then.

I have added several pictures to the link in my post above (post number 10).

These pictures clearly show the bottom of the 1957 Pontiac air cleaner with the tall stacks, like the modified one posted by the OP.

I also have a set of pictures of the 1961 SD air cleaner from an unknown source, but before I add them, I wish to do more research.

Will be taking pictures and adding them in coming days of more of the Pontiac tripower aircleaners, and the Oldsmobile J-2 "delta wing" oil bath aircleaner; possibly others. I have about 25 of these things to picture and list on my website, but they are high in the air on shelves, and I no longer do ladders, so will have my son help me with this project. Those interested in additional pictures might again check the link in a couple of weeks.

If anyone knows any Oldsmobile enthusiasts, I would like to get a good set of pictures of both 1966 Olds tripower aircleaners.

And still looking for a good set of pictures of the police large Pontiac aircleaner from 1966 for the three large carburetors.

Jon.

Carbking I think your right, someone did a good job fabbing this. I had an old school guy look at this, someone took a 61 sd top, took the crimp part off, took a different pan, welded the sides on and put it back together. Probably some racer from back in the day. Still a great piece, especially if someone is looking to clone a 61 sd
