Edelbrock head valve springs
I am going back to a flat tappet from a roller cam as many of you know. I am using the Crower 60919. I called Butler and I am 90% sure they said to order the Comp 986 springs. I ordered them from Amazon and the instructions give information for Chevys and Fords not Pontiacs. I went to the website and sure enough it’s mainly SBC and SBF applications. What should I be using for valve springs for a mild cam like that on Edelbrock round port heads. I know I could just call Butler again but I don’t want to call cause it’s like hey what part number did you say again? Everyone else is like 50 bucks cheaper so I’m not gonna order it from you I just need to know. I definitely don’t want to do that 986 are not even listed on their website but I’m almost sure that’s what they said.

Well it’s complicated but it’s simple. I would call Crower, here’s what you need to do, figure out the install height, I believe on e-heads it’s 1.950 asked Crower what the seat and open pressure should be for that cam. That’s the critical part.

Then take the springs you got from Amazon, and put them in a spring checking machine, see what the seat pressure is at the install height. Then do the open pressure is. This is very critical. To much or not enough seat or open pressure and you’ll end up wiping out that cam. Point is just because it says Chevy or Ford doesn’t mean their not the correct spring. My advice to you is if your not familiar with this process definitely takes them to a machine shop and have them do them. But critical thing is the call Crower and get that information. Just just can’t pop old ones off and put the new ones on.
Because some times springs need to be shimmed to get correct open and seat pressure. Also as long as their same diameter of your old springs you’ll be ok.

This is what you’ll need to check spring open and seat, doubt you’ll want to spend money just to do this, cheaper to just pay machine shop to do it

What's wrong with the springs already in the heads? Were they damaged? They may be more than adequate for a ft. You could pull the heads, take them for testing.

You may want to contact Crower as their valve spring spec for that cam seems excessive with 150# Seat & 350#@.470" lift
Link to cam card: 60919 Cam Card https://crower.com/printcamcard/?par...0919&x=10&y=11 The springs Butler recommended are more in line for a FTH cam at approx 120#/320#. The installed height and other dimensions are fine for the Edelbrock heads. The installed height is slightly shorter to accomodate the lower spring cup/locator and still arrive at the desired installed height.

Edelbrock heads are in theory set up at 1.800" from their factory. The 986 spring is rated 117 lbs at 1.800" / 322 rate and coil bind is 1.150"

And related, always check new springs at their actual VERIFIED installed height with their retainers on a calibrated spring tester. Never trust catalog specs ! I've had new springs that did not come anywhere close to their catalog rated specifications. And don't forget in all likelihood they will lose some pressure with run and use.

Crower may be allowing for spring drop off, some times 5-10# my E-head install height was 1.950. You never know.

Most of my E head IH are close to 1.800. Ones on my current build are 1.760 to get my seat pressure up to 140 for my HR.

Just to reiterate this important point that I stated earlier. 150# on the seat as Crower recommends for the 60919 is not appropriate for a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Use the springs you have which will be right around 120# seat & 320# @ .500" lift. I could do the math but would need to know if you're going to run 1.5, 1.52 or 1.65 rockers to extrapolate actual full lift pressure with your cam.

As an example of losing pressure with run in.
Ken Crocie did a build using a hydraulic flat tappet cam with the valvespring pressure set up at an initial setting of 130 on the seat. The actual pressure after a day on the dyno was 122 pounds. .

Someone in Crower’s office did reprints on the cam card mistakingly thought the 60919 was a hydraulic roller cam and rated the valve springs as if it was a HR cam. You only need 115 to 120 lbs seat pressure and the spring rate should be 280 to 330 lbs per inch. They have 150 seat and a spring rate of 425 listed on the cam cards right now. Don’t go by that the cam WILL go flat.

I was told I could not use any 1.65 rockers for break in. I bought a set of lightly used roller tip comps from a member here.

Probably overkill but since you got 'em, use 'em, for break-in.
