Default Assembly line changes??

Anyone know of any cars that were changed from the original build sheet while going diwn the assembly line, i.e. Interior color, vinyl/two tone added, color change. If so would the trim tag be modified or maybe just grease pencil/chalk markings on firewall to vring attention to such changes??

First of all I don't think they would make major changes like that on the fly. Too many moving parts to try to coordinate.

If they did make a change, it might be from white walls to redlines, or maybe adding a trailer hitch. Something pretty straightforward and easy to control.

They would have to mark up the build manifest (the main packet of all the build sheets), the individual build sheet, plus let the installer know via word of mouth and probably let the inspectors know as well (so they don't write it up as incorrect).

If it were me I'd probably hang a little sign in the windshield too.

Trim cowl tag would not be modified, although they might chose to create an updated one and install it place of the original.

If the price of the vehicle was modified as a result of the changes they would mark up the billing history (punch card) in pencil, showing the calculations and adjustment. I have seen this (punch cards corrected in pencil).

I hoping for your insight Keith, hope all is well. I am changing the interior in my 66 from black to red and was considering marking the firewall as if some sort of special order had come through last minute.. Maybe some higher up GM brass had requested something for his wife or a special occasion.. just having fun with all the little details of my project really. Here's a crude photo editor rendering of what I am thinking.. what do you all think?.. I'm kind of making this car the way I might have ordered it new, not trying to fool anyone into thinking the car is something it is not. Has anyone ever seen any markings of the sort?? Thanks Keith, and to anyone else who might have an opinion or any other insight.

That looks like fun.

The only time I had to make an update was after I had ordered my '87 pickup, and then found out I was moving to Arizona.

I had to hurry and add Air Conditioning to the order, but was able to catch it before all the build information was distributed and printed.

A/C was a very good added option for moving to Arizona! The pic is from me deleting the A/C hole in the new firewall lol. I am really leaning towards marking the firewall in that manner.. would they have ever used yellow grease stick or was it strictly white? This is a Pontiac plant car.

One could add AC at the dealer level, as well as many options, it cost more than having it built that way, I have never seen a firewall make that was not painted over on the assembly line on a low mileage survivor car

We used whatever we had. Yellow, white, red.

If you found a good one on the floor you'd pick it up and use that.

It wasn't an engineering controlled item; it was more an assembly plant specific "help a brutha out" kind of thing.

Cool, thanks again Keith! Here's the last couple days progress.. Body color on cowl and firewall.. kind of excited to see the first bit of Burgundy sprayed.. sprayed the color Wednesday night and cleared it during my lunch yesterday. I'll be blacking out the underside and firewall tomorrow hopefully 😊
