Default Can't mount Hurst to Muncie

Can not get Hurst shifter to mount properly to Muncie M-20 in my 1969 FB. The problems are: 1. Can only use 2 bolts to mount plate to tranny (Should be 3). No other way to position plate to tranny and get 3 holes to line up. 2. If I mount the shifter to plate as in the pics below, the shifter handle is positioned too far rearward and contacts floor opening sheet metal. The tail shaft # is 3857584GM and the case is a 660. Do I need a different mounting plate or is it something else? The tranny and shifter are not original to this car.

I'm not sure if that's the correct bracket or not, but the hole on the bracket with the nut welded on the back should go up- towards the hole in the floor.

If you look on-line at Hurst catalogs, you will see that there are MANY mounting plates to mount these shifters to particular applications. You just need the right one.

ID:	620372The bracket in your first pick does NOT look like a Hurst part. Marked for a '69 Camaro, it's probably for the factory Muncie shifter. The Hurst plates for Pontiacs are often aluminum, or if stamped steel, look different than that one.

Default Incorrect mtg plate, possible incorrect shifter linkage.

'69 Camaros with performance small blocks & a Muncie 4 speed received the exact same factory installed HURST shifter as '69 V8 Firebirds with the Muncie 4 speed. '69 396 & 427 Camaro's used the same round stick Hurst shifter but with a specific bigblock shifter mtg plate. 1968 Firebirds with factory Muncie 4speeds used the same stamped steel mtg plate & rods as the '69 Firebird w factory Hurst 4 speed shifter. The factory Hurst shifter for a '68 differs from a '69, in that it has a thin stamped steel tab that locates the factory backup light switch. The '68 factory installed Hurst Bird shifter also has a "kicker" on the reverse lever to push up against that back up lamp switch when the factory Hurst shifter is put in reverse.

The correct ''69 factory Hurst small block" stamped steel mtg plate mounts low & to the rear of the "W pattern" of the tail shaft's 5 mounting bosses. As the stamped steel factory mtg plate mounts that far back, the factory shifter rods are longer & specific for that application.

For those trying to mix aftermarket Hurst Competition shifter rods, or say other factory installed Muncie shifter linkage, you will soon become frustrated, none of that will work.. 25-30 years ago this factory linkage & mtg plate was not easy to find, then eBay & various websites popped. I've pieced together nearly a half dozen sets after chasing the first set for a '68 400 4spd convert that i rescued. The correct shifter stamped steel mtg plate was reproduced about 20 years ago. even the '69 bigblock Camaro mtg plate has been reproduced, though how accurate the latter is, is up to scrutiny.

Default Is a #773 what I need?

Thanks for the input all and Roger thanks for the great information. I spoke to the man who rebuilt this tranny and I explained the situation. He said that I would probably need a #773 mounting plate to get me going. Does this sound right to anyone? I searched the web for an illustration of the 733 but could not find one. Dave

Default Got it now.

Received the 195-7773 mounting plate which attached nicely to tail shaft and centered the shifter properly in place with 3 mounting bolts. I did have to modify each of the shifter rods for proper length and angle and now it shifts properly. Thanks again for all of the valuable input! Dave
