Default Two seemingly unrelated questions

In trying to track down a loud metallic noise coming from somewhere at the back of the new 463 I noticed that the space between the starter bendix gear and the flex plate was very close. I loosened the starter bolts and was able to move it a very small amount then measured the gap with a feeler gauge. That dimension is now .010. That seems awfully close to me. The 400 in my son's car has a thin spacer between the crank and the flex plate but the 400/463 in my T/A never had that spacer. It would give the flex plate more gap with the bendix gear. Anyway I fired the engine and the 'old' noise is gone but in getting down under the edge of the car where I could see the flex plate I was hearing a pulse type noise that I think is the exhaust ringing in the header pipes. Don't know that I have ever listened to that noise from under the car but it just seemed louder than I would have expected. I did check for leaks and could not find any.

Don’t worry about that exh noise, it’s normal, and if this motor has a bigger stroke then your last one then it’s producing bigger more noticeable exh pulses.

And yes .010” is close.

Steve, thanks for the response. Do you know about the spacer I mentioned?

I have seen aftermarket starters come with shims where you can space it away from the flex plate. Goes between the motor and mounting block

Good point. I may have some of those shims already.
