Default 62 389 Oil Leaks

Have a nasty oil leak coming from the rear main seal. The rope style seal is new and I am wondering if there is an updated seal or something I missed.

With rope seals it’s very hard to not have any stray shards of the seal from getting under the cap.

When I was using rope seals I would grind a small oval recess in the cap around where the seal can stick out just in case, so the cap would not sit cocked.

It’s also necessary to put a very small dab of sealer on each end of the seal and this recess helps to use a good amount of sealer to join things up.

Also a lot of gasket sets come with both rope seals since there’s one size for 3” main cranks and 3.250” main cranks.

You don’t want to have used the wrong one.

Did you have both to pick from?

Modern rope seals are not the same as the older/original ones, havent heard of too many people getting new rope seals to seal up. The best rope seal is the graphite one from best gasket sold by a few places like DCI.

The 1 & 2 piece neoprene gaskets are the better option if installed right & the serrations on the crank arent too rough.

Also, be sure its not the oil pan U seal gasket, the rubber U seals are notorious for leaking and will look almost the same as a rear main leak. Best option for that is using the thick cork gasket & a good quality sealer.
