Hello.
I didn't know I had some settling water over the winter in the trunk. Long story, don't get me started. Now have some surface rust to tend to. I have attached a photo. Just wondering how you would go about addressing this. Hand sand it, another option.. ? It doesn't need to be perfect, but would like to clean up the surface browning rust area, and touch it up with spray paint. I have a site and color code for the Saddle Bronze Poly. So I'm good there. Just don't know what the best way is to tackle the cleaning up of the surface before painting it. Please let me know. Thank you! |

My Tempest had a much worse surface rust problem on the trunk floor.
I wire brushed it until I couldn’t remove any more rust then used POR-15 silver that has aluminum solids to help fill pitting. Something like Rust Encapsulator after wire brushing (use the small stainless brushes the size of a large toothbrush) should do the trick here. Then topcoat using whatever spray paint you need to match the color. I had the same issue with my Saddle Bronze Le Mans convertible but even worse than the Tempest. I patched a few small holes with fiberglass cloth and the same silver POR-15, later put a coat of semigloss black POR-15 over the silver. A reproduction trunk mat hides everything, I didn’t bother painting body color over the POR-15.

I did the POR-15 application over 25 years ago so this stuff has stayed put and isn’t peeling.
You could do some sanding on the lighter rust areas and wire brush the deeper pitted areas.

A lot of people like this better than POR-15. I’ll try it next if I need to do some rust sealing.

I will probably purchase a quart to be safe and try it out.
Since its Matte Black, do you see any issues with Saddle Bronze applied over it? |

Well it might take a few extra coats to cover it.
Buy a reproduction trunk mat and it won’t matter anyway. Just pull out the mat from time to time and dry the trunk floor, like right after you wash the car.

Thats not bad at all. I did the following- Wire brush for anything heavy. Oshpo for chemical stabalization. Then Hammerite paint which can be brushed on and is thick enough to hide small imperfections and finishes in a hard durable surface. I like it better that por15. Then finally body color.
It lasted until I sold the car 15 years later even though I had a rubber mat in it and the car sat covered in a carport |

I second what andre said, brush on some Ospho, let it dry for a couple days then topcoat with some paint.

Most auto paint stores can mix the color and put it in an aerosol can for you. Alternately, an inexpensive spray gun should do a nice job if you have a compressor.
