Default 1970 Grand Prix SJ 455 "XF" 370hp TH400 Numbers matching GOING TO THE CRUSHER

I have a friend of mine who picked up a 70 model Grand Prix SJ with the original 455 engine and turbo 400 transmission. From what I can tell all the numbers match that I can see. I hate to see such a prime example of classy Pontiac muscle be crushed. A perfect project car if you have the time and want a prime example of what Pontiac used to be. The car is located southeast of Oklahoma City near Tecumseh Oklahoma.

He said $1500. If I had the extra cash I would have already loaded it on my trailer. I took a picture of the vin number.

I'd be dragging it home if I lived in the area.

This GrandPrix is a '69 model SJ. Should have a XF 428 w 62 heads & a 3.23 rear, good chance a Safe-T-Track rear, three of the last 4 '69 SJ GP's ive hauled in had 3.23 STT rears.

Am an hour away & am pretty deep in '69-70 & '71 GP sheetmetal, & misc GP parts. If this GP was a '70 SJ I'd prob be in for the quick haul. Coincidentally, my '69 428HO model J
& two of my 455 HO keeper cars were sold new less than 30 miles away in Norman.

If the engine is good you’re not going to loose money at $1500.00

This GrandPrix is a '69 model SJ. Should have a XF 428 w 62 heads
The VIN was sort of a dead give away ,,, 69 model.
Probably a good idea to do more diligence since the new fellow claims the engine checks out as a numbers matching 455.
I don't think he has any experience with Pontiacs or engine ID parameters.
Better to be safe than sorry.

An XF 428 with 62 heads would be a 4bolt main block. Standard log manifolds.
SJ usually have in-dash gauges too , iirc. GTO interchange.
3.23 Posi would be GTO interchange too.
If it all checks out right , could be worthwhile to an end user at that price.

Wonder if the color was matador red or castilian bronze ? Carousel red ??

I'm a chrysler guy.. I had a GT37 back in the 70s. I know where the engine ID number is and it checks out as a 1970 GP 455. The only other number Is the vin. The data plate on the firewall is visible but hard photographe because the hood is in the way. Factory chrome valve covers and air cleaner made me assume it was a 69 with a 428. The XF eng code is 70 455 ...

8721Coker, Look under the 1969 section in that link you posted. XF is also a 428 as BVZ said.

I am partial to my web page though:
Engine Code Search

Type XF in the Engine Code input, click submit and see what all the years XF codes there are.

As to the ID of the engine, check to see if the partial VIN is on the engine.
It will definitely tell if it is original or not. Also what model year the engine is for.

Then there is a date code on the engine that will help greatly.

The VIN pic shown shows the car is definitely a 1969 GP along with other body panels I believe.

Either way a 1969 GP with the 1969 XF (428 370 HP) engine and parts would be a good deal probably to someone.

XF block code was used in multiple years .
Only a partial indicator for ID purposes.
In 1969 it was a 428 , in 1970 it was a 455

1969 intake would be 9794234 casting number (raised numbers in front of carb area)
1970 intake would be 9799068 casting number (same as above)
Not to be confused with firing order also in raised numbers in same vicinity -18436572

1969 cylinder heads would be casting number 62 (raised numbers between the 2 center spark plugs)
1970 cylinder heads would be casting number 64 (same as above)

1969 carb would be 7029268
1970 carb would be 7040268

455 would have "455" in cast raised numbers on the side of the block towards the front passenger side near the first freeze plug.

Those are foolproof indicators if it is a complete unaltered engine.

There is no harm if a mistake has been made.
It's a 1969 car , and more likely to have its original 1969 engine.

Verifying the pictured items will tell defacto.
You did a good service by posting about the car here , either way it goes.

If a door will open , the door jamb color might tell more about original color since the trim tag isn't viewable.
Someone might want to restore the car if they like the color.
Some had leather interior too , versus the regular comfort weave vinyl insets.
