The car has the round dome light and it was working but not now,the courtesy light do work.

The fuse is good,the door switches work,there is power to one side of the dome light bulb holder,the wire connections at the bulb holders look ok. I made a make shift ground connected to the non hot side of the dome light bulb and it wouldnt light up.


What else is there to check?

No I never removed the switches,I did lube them up again. My thought is the courtesy lights work with the switches so they are OK. I also looked under the dash near the coutesy lights and never saw anything amiss.

Would hate to pull out the switch and have a connector come loose as that could be hard to get the wires back in place.

Are you sure you have 12 volts on one side of doom light connector? If you do then there is no reason that the light should not come on with 12 volts and some kind of ground at dome light.

Yes tested with a multimeter and had 12.2 volts on one side of the dome light.
I thought for sure once i added the temporary ground to the dome light terminal it would light up. I pulled the headliner down a bit and made sure the 2 wires were present and not broken. They are and still in the factory holders

From what Ive been reading the dome light system has 3 grounds ,2 at the door switch terminals and the headlight switch,which still has the gauges ground in place

I dont get why it would just up and quit,old I guess?

If so, I'd look at the dome light housing?
Might have broken wire of some loose connection there.

Dome and courtesy have separate fuses. They do share the same ground switches.

Volts you're seeing at the dome light could be back feeding through the courtesy lights. You could see volts but not enough amps to light the dome light.

Nope dome light wont come on with either door open and cant see anything wrong with the dome light wiring or the dome light connectors.

Thats a good idea to ground the housing perhaps the screws into the roof are not making good contact?

I just did a ground test on the dome housing in place and also removed from the roof and I still cant see the light.

I didnt know the courtesy lights and dome are on different fuses,I did have a good look at the fuses in the fuse box and never saw one fried.

Next thing for me will be to find out the exact fuse the dome light would be

Your owners manual has a page calling out all the fuses.

Would the 79-80 T/A fuse box be the same as a 78?

I have a nice glovebox set of paperwork for a 78 up for sale if you need a set.

Fuse was good so start ripping apart

After taking out the rear bottom seat,the door sill plate,the emergency brake assembly,pry out the drivers side kick panel and carefully inspecting the wires
I found the problem.

It was a pink wire with black stripe that connects at the fuse box,this wire branches off from another pink multiconnection near the fuse box

The connector was just loose enough that wiggling wires flashed the dome light.Damn thing sure looked like it was in there solid.
