The Chassis Manual is pretty strong in advising not to damage the coating on the shaft when removing/installing it or when changing the bearings. Does anyone know what that "coating" consists of ? Is it just something to prevent corrosion like a waxy film or is it some kind of chemical process like anodizing ?

FYI, as I inspected the three shafts I have, it appears that they are covered in a thick coating of some kind of shellac as described in the article Pat Longen referred to. Mine had several places where the shellac had been chipped or scratched and other areas with light surface rust. I removed the coating in these areas (mostly at the ends of each shaft) and used a brass wire wheel and fine grit paper to remove the shellac and polish the surface smooth. I then applied a coat of rust resistant paint. If this will cause any metallurgical issues or failure in the future remains to be seen, but I seriously doubt it. It really appears that the coating was strictly to prevent any long term corrosion issues that would lead to failure of the shaft. Since my vehicle will never see the years of use the factory anticipated, I don't expect a problem. If I'm wrong, I'll be sure to post any negative results.
