My brother has pulled the TH400 out of his 69 Bird and installed a 700R4. The car has the floor shift console. What shifter or conversion have any of you used? He bought one quite a few years ago and cant recall from where but it doesnt correctly engage the OD gear. So he is looking around to find one that is for this conversion. Any help?

The factory shifter will work with the detents on the 700r4, however you lose the ability to manually drop down into 1st gear in this configuration.
If you want to have all 4 correct detents, with the factory shifter, you can use the shiftworks conversion. https://shiftworks.com/products/1968...=3409103061013 Or any aftermarket shifter designed for the 4 speed transmissions in the 700r4/4l60e/4l80e family will also work. TCI, Hurst, B&M etc.

Its a consle shifter. He said the shifter he installed looks the same as the one from shift works. He is using the cable from the old shifter and TH400. Does he need a different cable length for a 700R4?

Factory cable length is likely fine. It sounds like if he's already put in the conversion, he may need to adjust the cable for the detents on the 700r4. It's possible adding an adjustable cable may make this easier.
