Default Check out my new paper weight....

I dropped a valve a couple months ago and finally got to pulling the engine and tearing it down to have the block assessed. Good times!

The best theory I can come up with is that the keeper failed. The ledges seem to be sheared off.

Do you recall source of the keeper, Apparently it was lacking some strength

No. A friend of mine built the heads. He sourced everything. He's an excellent machinist/engine builder. I think this was just bad luck.

A little JB Weld and it'll be good as new.

What do the other valve stems look like on ones that did not drop?

Those look like factory type replacement valves, head could have come off.

Not sure. I haven't disassembled the heads yet. They were 6X heads and I'll probably be moving to an aluminum set when things start moving.

Yeah that looks like the common failure point for the OE valves.

Can you look on the paperwork and see if the valves were replaced, and a part number?

I just texted him. They were stainless aftermarket valves.

Guessing the dynamics:
Head falls off, valve stem popps-up, rocker/ pushrod displace, Keepers fall out of retainer, valvestem goes down into CYL for chomping.

Yeah if they were SS valves, then it was either keepers, retainers, maybe rocker contact on retainer, etc.

Bummer. Sorry to hear about this by the way...

That retainer in that first photo has witness marks that looks like the rocker arm started to ride on it.

That would have compressed the spring and then released it which would have hammered the lock and failed it.

I don’t know that any grade of keeper could take that kind of pounding for long.

That roller tip sweep pattern on the top of those keepers is hard to explain.

Do I see that a jam nut was used to adjust those rocker arms?

What rpm did this mayhem take place at?

Yes, a jam nut was used to adjust the rockers.

it happened around 12-1500 RPM. It was in my garage.

My theory is (and I could be way off base), the keeper started to give way and the valve stem started to sink and that allowed the rocker to make contact with the retainer. Then the keeper finally let go and the valve dropped fully in.

If you look at the pics of the keeper, it looks like the ledges that hold the valve up are sheared off.

Good eye.

Rocker/retainer interference from short pushrods can do that. The rocker becomes a valve spring compressor, out come the keepers and then pop goes the weasel.

Check for interference especially if the keepers look fine.

Understand what you guys are saying about rocker contact but if a lock goes south slowly because of bad heat treating the keeper will gain installed height then conceivably touch rocker as well..... So it comes down to which spot exhibits more wear time before total carnage and that's where it all started
