Default New Scammer Approach?

First, thank you for trying to block all the bot scammers with the verification software.
However, yesterday I received a fishy email trying to sell me something I had posted for. You can tell by the way the email is written it’s a scammer. Beware guys, they still are getting our information somehow I suspect.

Thanks, I fixed it but apparently they already have it. I’m sure if one has it they all do

I was hit by a similar scammer. I have been advertising for a fan shroud I really need and received a PM with a link to someone who said they had one the exact part number I needed. I e-mailed back and forth a few times and determined it was a scam after several e-mails and getting my hopes up, Clue 1. They were not asking enough for it. Clue 2, when I asked for pics, they sent 2 "stock photos" of a reproduction fan shroud that was way too clean and not shaped properly like the one I really need. If they would have sent some pics of a crusty used one that looked correct, I may have fell for it. This kind of crap is what will eventually end the hobby for many of us. If I eventually get scammed and lose a bunch of $$, I will be done. Be careful out there.

I was getting them via PMs but this was an email to me and no PM.

The Captcha doesn't stop scammers , not supposed to.
It stops the bots and mass joins of the data miners , and no-gooders that want to crash the site buffer.

If you have not disabled "allow emails from members" in the user control panel ,
anyone who is a good or bad member can send you an email through PY.

One way to slow most of them is to ask for a picture of the item sitting on top of today's newspaper with the date showing in the picture.

Probably a few are good enough with Photoshop to do this, but most won't be able to doctor a picture.

Of course it’s wise to not use the email option setting.

However if at any time in the past you may have posted your email on the open forums (replying to an ad or whatever) the scammers will search through all of your posts and find it that way.

Same for phone numbers, they’ll scour the forums and find your number and then use that avenue to solicit payment for a part you may be looking for.

I still see people posting emails and phone numbers when they should be using private messaging, I guess some people aren’t aware of the private messaging feature or don’t know how to use it.

If you are bad about keeping too many PM's stored and people telling you they can't PM you ,
the email option is another way they can try to reach you.

If you don't get notifications from the site anymore - like a lot of us,
the email option will still come to you in your email.

It's not all that bad to have it in certain scenarios.
Just have to be aware of what is what, and who is who, on here.
Can click their screen name and check their profile for post count and how long a member. etc
