I've always used solvent (PSC1000 in recent years) in my harbor freight parts washer. Inherited a second HF unit a while back and filled it with slightly diluted purple power concentrate (cheaper but not as effective).

The PSC1000 works better - by far - and also safer when it comes to aluminum, etc. I generally only use the purple power for soaking/prewashing really filthy steel parts and often do a final touchup/rinse in the solvent.

Over the years I've also snagged some half empty cans of mineral spirits at garage/estate sales for cheap/free and dump them into the solvent tank to top them off.

For cleaning parts outside, try Dawn Powerwash. Great stuff!!!

Fun faxt: pistons soaked in gasoline overnight will let the carbon deposits brush off with ease.

Only if they come with the correct pump. Most fail because they use the wrong solvent/cleaner.

I have a Jegs parts cleaner which is probably the exact same unit as the harbor freight one. Ill X5 the Tractor Supply stuff.

To me it was the best blend of, cost and safety for a solvent based material. Gasoline probably works better for cheaper.......but I dont have the best spark dicipline in the world when Im working. So I didnt want to have a source of gas vapor floating around.

Good solvent destroys the pumps I've tried. Anyone found a pump that will last and not fail?

Little Giant 51855, used for many years with PSC 1000.

I also put a recirculation filter, drains, etc.... on my cheapy HF washer. Works great.
