Were the W72 automatic cars equipped with carb idle stop solenoids?

Yep.
Should have a green/ black wire in the harness. Look at your emission label, it shows rpm to set it. Last edited by burd; 01-02-2026 at 11:25 AM. |

Think that was 'idle up' for when the AC was turned on.

There’s a small decal on there too.

The reason I'm asking is that I just installed a new engine wiring harness from AAW but there is no green/black wire for the solenoid.
I know how it should be - as I recently installed an AAW harness in my '68 Firebird 400 automatic car and the green/black wire with proper connector WAS provided in that harness. I'll give AAW a call. |

Kenth - thanks for this. I think it clears up the situation.
My car is a factory "non-A/C" car, which is actually rarer than the A/C cars since most customers were ordering A/C by 1978. So my build is like pic 16. Pic 17 speaks to A/C and shows the solenoid. When you order the wiring harnesses from AAW, the non-A/C harness is a different p/n than the with A/C harness, so perhaps those folks knew not to include the green/black solenoid feed wire with a non-A/C harness. What got this whole thing going with me is that my Quadrajet (original to the car) is drilled and tapped at the left front corner for mounting a solenoid, but there's no solenoid present. I wasn't sure if it simply got discarded over the last 50 years or if it wasn't ever present to begin with. It's not like GM to take the time to drill and tap some feature if they're not going to use it, so I was confused, but perhaps GM drilled and tapped them all in that era for simplicity. I'm going to proceed with my build without adding a solenoid at this time. I'll look at other non-A/C cars this summer at shows and see what others have. |

None of the 78’s are rare. Rare VS a cheap person ordering a new car

All carbs are drilled and tapped for solenoid mounting in case it was required for use.
