what is it for? i didnt notice until a few days ago that the ia2 i bought just recently has a few differences aside from the serial numbers being up in front. this one has a solid lifter bore while the new one has small holes in the middle of the lifter bore. after a closer look i realised the main caps on this one is not registered but i was sure they were on the one i just bought new a couple years back. so i dug it out and seen it has registered caps and in the finishing kit it has a spacer for the timing cover to oil pan. is that needed for all ia2s or just the newer ones? i just assumed the saddles were machined into for the caps but this makes me think the rails must be raised?

If you have a registered main, then it's needed as the oil pan is further out. I usually I just double up on the timing cover area.

i was digging through 20 years of archives just now...looks like alot of people done just what you mentioned. i guess on my older run block, with doweled mains...i wont need that or the longer oil pump driveshaft.
i have the plate for the new block |

I thought all IA2 had registered mains requiring the spacer and longer oil pump drive? And the KRE block is doweled like the original Pontiac block requiring no special parts?

i thought so too, but from what i read the earlier versions were doweled. then it looks like it changed to registered only....but i think it may have changed to dowel and registered....atleast on the aluminun....ill have to pull a cap on my new iron block and check if its got both. |

Original Indian Adventures blocks used dowel pins to locate the main caps. They can be identified by the Indian "Chief Many" Horses engraved on the front of the block. They don't require longer oil pump driveshaft or oil pan spacer.
First design All-Pontiac blocks used registered main caps without dowel pins and require the oil pan spacer and longer oil pump driveshaft. Second design, which has had various updates over the years used registered mains and dowel pins to locate the main caps. They require the longer oil pump driveshaft and oil pan spacer. First design KRE block was soft and used dowel pins to locate the mains and uses factory length oil pump driveshaft and no spacer needed for the pan. It also doesn't drain the oil pocket in the valley for the number right pair of lifters. Second design KRE much better in the hardness department. Uses standard oil pump driveshaft and no oil pan spacer. Still holds oil in the right rear corner of the lifter valley. |

i will have to go back and try to find which member it was...20 years ago but i know still post here that said his block...#17 of the first 25 runs of ia2 was doweled...and needed the oiling holes in mains opened a bit to lign with the bearings. it doesnt have tge indian logo on it, just on drivers front it has apsjb and some numbers stamped. i seen where rob c posted back in 04 or 05 that all ia2 blocks cast from then on would get registered caps and no dowels found it |

i may have one of the first 25 or so blocks. its all freshly machined at 4.35...must have started out with a smaller bore since i cant imagine it never being finished machine and run in over 20 years. just the same i. gonna check all that was mentioned in that post
ps: i almost got stuck with one of those straight cap kre butter blocks a couple years back on fb |

I believe Butler and AP has a checklist on their websites of things that need to be checked on new blocks. The oil passages being drilled completely are mentioned.
I didn't remember that AP's first batch of blocks didn't have the registered mains. |

they do, i was reading through it last night. im sure this paticular blocks been checked an ran before in its life but im gonna check all anyway. i guess it would have been nice if it was newer but really i doubt ill ever reach those dowel only mains limits either way.
i gotta order the freeze plugs from ap anyway for this one..so ill probably ask if theres any other things to look for when i do. i been seeing he list a crank support for blowers on his site too...not sure if tgere still available or even needed for my roots build but if its avail it coukdnt hurt |

Has a spacer for the timing cover to oil pan.
I took that felt gasket and made myself a metal copy, which worked out much better. I still used a bit of the Right stuff on each side of the metal strip with my oil pan gasket. I actually use the BOP one piece pan gasket with hasn't leaked since installed 4 or 5 years ago.
