I recently had two significantly swollen lithium batteries, from a laptop and a picture frame. I called my fire department to ask how to dispose of them. They said I should get an appointment at the county hazardous waste collection and in the mean time, put them in a Ziplock bag to stay dry and put them in the middle of my yard away from the house and anything flammable until the appointment. Then I started thinking about how many of those batteries are in the house....

It's like a pile of oily rags they may or may not ever start burning.

It's really important to NOT buy batteries for anything using Lithium type cells in them from no-name companies as well..
Can you just imagine what those onboard that sail boat went threw.

I had a laptop where the battery was swollen and making the keyboard bulge out. Got rid of that quickly in the battery recycling bin.

As a result of my recent escapades into air guns, I've learned just a little about Li batteries.

I bought an AEG (Automatic Electric Gun) which is an airsoft gun. My intended use was simulation/training. I subsequently learned more about the Lipo (Lithium polymer) batteries it used which was not initially very clear.

I have lots of Lithium ion batteries. Have for many years. These Lithium polymer batteries are not the same.

When I read the instructions that said you have to charge it in an allegedly fireproof container and that you can't leave it unattended while charging and that you can't leave it fully charged for any period of time and that for storage it must be in a narrow range of partial charge and that you need to store them in a allegedly fireproof container and that you should never let it completely discharge I said to myself, this is ridiculous and totally unsafe.

So basically, Lipo batteries are much more prone to thermal runaway, fires and explosions unless managed within very specific parameters. And even then, they say you need to store it in these flimsy, allegedly fireproof containers.

Hell no. I'm not keeping that in my house. No way.

Once I learned about this I sent everything back and bought stuff that runs on Nimh batteries which are much safer,

Lipo fire safety bags and boxes are not safe. Even the high end commercial products don't fully contain the gases which can be fatal
