(Re)starting my 69 Firebird restoration effort and would appreciate tech input and recommendations.
For context - my goal is to bring the car back close to original and just drive on weekends, etc. I’ve searched the FORUM and found lots of good info – but some is a bit dated - so here goes: 1. Reproduction parts. General question - any other sources beyond ames, firebirdcentral and classic industries that I should be searching for basic reproduction items like a radiator, trim moldings, glass? 2. Interior specific. Have all original but need everything refreshed. Currently looks like seat / door kits are hard to come by (back order) on the above websites. True? Any recommendations for closest to original, best fit, etc. would be appreciated. 3. Exhaust. Car had headers on it when I bought it. I’ve been following the long-branch manifold saga for years and it doesn’t seem like that situation is improving. Currently thinking about going with the Hedman headers D-port most here say fit well. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. 4. Steering. Originally manual but I found a correct power box, pump, etc. Any known issues with this swap on a 4-speed car (with headers)? 5. Wheels and brakes. Want to upgrade to power discs. I have the original 14x7 Rallys. Any strong reason to move up to 15s? Again, not looking for super performance – this is just a weekend cruiser build. Thanks in advance.

Inline Tube may have some parts you will need that the other places you noted may not have. Frank's Pontiac Parts for good used parts.
Cold Case radiators are hard to beat. Go on sale often too. I think Ames is now making/selling exhaust manifolds to fill the void from often backordered R.A.R.E. ones. 1969 Firebird power steering pitman arm is not a easy find. But same as a like a 1974 ventura. May get lucky on ebay if you don't already have one. Typically not easy to source and not cheap. Obviously Legendary covers and ACI foam whch I think they now own is the best stuff for interior. 14" wheels are fine but more tire options with 15" - and depending on brake kit you buy might need to step up to 15" to clear them. Good luck with it! |

Headers usually are a pain in the ass, and the improvement for close to stock street cars is overrated. Logs do fine here; easy install and starter access - better clearance and few leaks. Ames had a stock exhaust kit made for them and drop shipped - it fit superbly.
What code are the 14's? Tire rack shows 195/75R14 as equivalent. This is what they have: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...erformance=ALL I would go 205/75R14 if a V8: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...erformance=ALL Examine your Rallys carefully, especially around the lug hole: they do wear out and IIRC are not hub centric. |
