Final purchased a nice Hunter dsp 9000 wheel balancer.I just got fed up with someone improperly balancing my wheels. They never have the lug centric adapter ,they can't seem to mount the ralley wheels without wheel not centered.Im always having to look over their shoulders to make sure wheel isn't wobbling when spinning. So now I can put much more time into balancing my own wheels making sure everything is good.

Ive been looking for a cheap used one on marketplace myself. I havent even had all that bad of experiences, it just seems so outrageously expensive to get tires mounted and balanced now.
I just had a local Jiffy Lube take the drag radials off my firebird and put normal street tires back on. They called me and tried to say they couldnt do it because the tires werent the same size. I had to ask for the manager to explain they were removing tires that were borderline too big for the wheels and putting on a more appropriate size. Im normally the first person to leap to the defense of the Autozone employees of the world I hate when the car comminuties are mean to low wage employees who dont get paid enough to deal with abuse. But man.......I walked in and handed you everything you needed, and got overcharged. Dont make me beg for it on top.

Yeah I paid 500 so couldn't pass it up.Had to rearrange my garage to get it to fit next to my wife's dryer to share the 240 volt outlet.Im having fun with this thing. I have gages set up to check runout or bends and make sure wheel is exactly centered.

Buy an electronic scale, use the high accuracy option, you can trim weights. My Coats, I can get balance down to .01 oz per plane.
And use a pin plate or hub plate - whatever Hunter calls it. Backbone and pin plate are the best way to mount a wheel to a balancer. Coats training said modern wheels, the centers were off 5% on average, so not to use cones. Cones are simply quick for tire shops. Coats noted 50% of the balancing problems start with mounting the wheel to the balancing machine. If you see the machine asking for several ounces of weight on a plane, double check your mounting. If that balancer does dynamic balance, then can do a "static" imbalance - that adds a weight to the center line. Typically small. Good luck. |

The Hunter DSP9000 is a great wheel balancer. I guess you already know you absolutely stole that thing! Around here a decent well used one cost $2500.00-3000.00. I have a Coats 950 which is similar but not the quality or pin point accuracy of the Hunter. But when all is said and done, a high quality balance job all comes down to setting it up on the machine just right and getting to know your machine for it's little weird quirks. As mentioned, the Coats machines have a high resolution setting to balance to .01 oz. The Hunter does as well. You will never be a slave to a tire shop again! Just knowing I can balance a tire as accurate as possible without a bunch of lip and excuses from the tire store idiots is worth every penny you spent on it and more.

I use the Hunter road force balancer at my friend's shop, for dealing with headache vibrations having access to a good balancer is priceless.
