This thread is an addendum to my stuck in 2nd gear post from a year ago. I finally rebuilt the shifter friday night and found a couple things missed. (Last year I just took everything apart and cleaned and regreased) The shim between 1-2 and reverse was thinner in the rebuild kit, the first shim did not have the "kickout" to the rear, and it only had one wave plate on the outside. So I replaced the shims including having to wave loc plates on the outside. It seemed slightly tougher to get back into the body. Also I installed the wavy washer and nylon washer in the front and back of the shifter handle. They were previously not in it. Took the car out and it was flawless, I beat the heck out of it. On sunday just regular shifting it stuck in 2nd again. I've lined up all the rods multiple times. I am at a loss here , Anyone have any ideas? I am out of them. Thank you in adavance!

Are you using the "approved" shifter alignment tool or a drill bit or hex key?
On my recently rebuilt M20 w/ only around 1000 miles .. 1st, 2nd and even 3rd were getting weird. I tried dialing it in many x's w/ as large a drill bit or hex key I could get in there but shifting never felt really right. It wasnt until a friend lent me his plastic alignment thing .. very first time it ended up perfect. my 2c .. good luck!

I have the white plastic tool. I'm going to try it again though. My shifter does feel tighter after the rebuild. The kit came with one, my old one was pretty beat up. Shifter is a 68 and the trans is an M20 FWIW.
