Default Question about brake hardline routing

I'm getting ready to plumb the brake and fuel lines on my '66 GTO, and I am making all the lines from scratch for a variety of reasons using copper-nickle tubing.

For the front crossover line that passes underneath the engine, why does the factory route the line around the front of the driver side engine mount? Wouldn't it be simpler to just keep the line on the backside of the crossmember?
