I saw that in Performace Years they are now selling dash pads and dash covers. The pads are $175 while the covers are $75. Anyone know what the difference is?
Also, it was my understanding that the only way to get a dash pad was to have your existing one redone by some place out in Califronia that was going to charge close to $400. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I assume you're talking about the 68 version? The dash pad is repoped which should be the vilnyl, padding and metal skeleton (I'm assuming). The cover is a ABS type plastic overlay that you would put on over your old dash pad.
If you're talking about the 69 version; can either buy a dash cover or send it to Just Dashes in Calif. for about $600-700 and about 6 weeks delivery time. I have read that the covers are nice for a driver but not a show car. I'm just hoping that the 69 is repoped before I get to that stage of my rebuild. Good luck and I hope this helps. Jamie

I guess I should have included the year of my car. It is the '68. What do you mean by repopped? Does this mean I just unbolt my current dash pad and bolt on the new $175 one?

I put a Performance Years Repop (slang for reproduction) dash pad in my 68 non-AC and it is EXCELLENT! I just pulled out the original and put the new one in place.I had my whole interior completely gutted so I decided to do it right, but I have also seen a few of the dash cover caps installed and they look good when carefully installed. They only make black reproduction dash pads so I had to spray paint mine using vinyl dye, but it all worked out GREAT!
I would recommend using wide masking tape to protect the metal part of your dash above and below the pad area when you install the new pad because there are metal "pins" that hold the dash pad in place which can scratch the dash face while you are jockeying the pad in place. |

Two years ago when I last looked into replacing this piece it was going to cost me $400. Its nice to see that someone is reproduing these. I told my wife what she can get me for Christmas!
Thanks to everyone who answered my questions. You guys really make this hobby enjoyable! |

I bought a '68 reproduction A/C dash pad several years ago and the fit was horrible. It had a fiberglass core and when I got it the whole thing was warped. I had to do quite a bit of dremel work to get the vents to fit. Once I got it installed there were gaps between the dash and the pad up to 1/2" in certain spots.
I sent pictures of the modifications and fit to Ames and it was so bad they refunded my money and pulled the dash pad from their catalogs. It looks like PY is still selling this dash pad with some warning about the work required. I can post pics of the problem areas and modifications I had to make if anyone is interested. If you have a '68 A/C car I'd recommend spending $100 on the cover or shelling out the big bucks for the Just Dashes treatment. It sounds like the non A/C pad is a lot better.

Hi,
I installed my dash cover a couple of weeks ago in my 68 LeMans (w/AC)- the fit was absolutely perfect! If it's going to be a driver I would recommend it. The grain is slightly different than the original, but hardly worth mentioning. |

Vidoro.... could you please post pictures of the problem areas for me? This is going to be one of my winter projects on the car and I need to know what I am going to be faced with. My car is a 68 too

I bought one from performance years about a year and half ago for my 68 with a/c the fit and quality of reproduction was horrible. I bit the bullet and sent my original to just dashes, yes it seems expensive but well worth.

Here's a couple pics of the modifications I had to do to the air outlet on the reproduction dash pad. As delivered on the left, after modifications on the right. I had to remove the provided studs and install my own.

Last pic. Conclusion...don't waste your money. Save up until you can afford to send your original to Just Dashes.

HI Amy,
I got mine from Ames about a year ago (I've been collecting parts for a while). I'll post a photo here this weekend. Emar |

I think it must be the AC thing, because I'm telling you that my non-AC repro dash from PY fit PERFECTLY and looks GREAT! No hacking or modifications required at all.
I just painted it the correct color with vinyl dye and put it on. I'll send pics to anyone who wants to see it. |
