Default Steering shaft

So I went to install a new power steering gearbox on my 65 Lemans. To my surprise, it's got a solid (non-collapsible) steering shaft.

I want to make it collapsible, if possible without removing the shaft from the column. I'm open to taking the column out though if necessary.

I was thinking a Borgeson Universal
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/brg-460018?rrec=true

Thinking cut off the splined end of the old one and using a lathe weld it on. On the other end cut off near the existing column and use a coupler, or sleeve/pin.

I'm open to other ideas or critique of my plan.

I may post this up in suspension as well.

I think you could just switch to a 1967 column....I really don't know what all is involved but that is the first year for the collapse-able column.

A 1967 column will probably bolt in but all the electrics are different. With some work you could convert things.

U-joints. Look at the Flaming River stuff, which is made by Borgeson for Flaming River:

They make kits too.

You should really have a collapsible shaft, not so much for safety, but due to body flex, you can destroy the lower column bearing.

You might be able to use a later model shaft too, A, F, X body one, with rag joints. Can just melt out the plastic pins and allow it to 'conform' to the length you need.
