a-arm splash shield location, 1966 Bonneville
Folks,
Adding back the splash shields to the wheel wells. no idea of location front to back? The repo shields have a hole in the rubber. Does this line up with hole in the wheel well lip? Anyone have a pic of the factory location? Ed S 1966 Bonneville conv. Last edited by estokes-bonnie66; 03-08-2019 at 03:33 PM. |

On my 63 GP the round hole of the rubber lines up with the round hole in the fender well and they come with plastic buttons that go through and they come with staples that go through the rubber and fender well in the other holes.. Mine came from Ames.

The hole in the splash shield lined up perfectly with the hole in the fender.
Here's a pic when installed. The square fastener is used in the hole. I used self tapping screws (later painted black) instead of the staples.

"Right" or wrong, those self-tappers are a helluva lot easier to install versus the staples. Even with the fenders on the bench, it's still a *itch to clamp them down properly

Trick #1 use the same gauge stainless steel (soft) will bend and take the ends and twist with needle nose pliers. Better than factory cause they will never rust

staples, steps taken
Folks,
Thanks for the options and feedback. I decided to try using the free staples. I had the fenders 'on the bench' so what the hell. 1. spring clamp rubber shield in place, use hole to align. 2. use 5/64 drill bit(+1/64 is better) and drill from back side thru rubber into wood block, both holes 3. take staple in hand and wiggle thru rubber, while looking at metal side, sneak the staple thru the two holes. (hard part) 4. start to bend staples with wood block while backing staple with second wood block. 5. ball peen hammer staples closed while backing staple with wood block. 6. Repeat. Not a bad job, need to be in a zen place. Probably impossible to do while mounted in car. Coating is 10% gloss black powder coat. Ed S 1966 Bonn conv |

My bad Jonsie, was also checking the bend side, you cant duplicate the factory ends with those hard steel staples

It is indeed difficu;lt to get the ends lined-up nicely, even working w/the fenders on the bench
