I regularly ran in the mid 180's on my old Suzuki Hayabusa. Redline in 5th gear was ~186 mph. There was a 6th gear, but I had no desire to top 200. Besides, usually by 185 mph everyone knew who the winner was.

I got my '67 LeMans up to 125 on a 2 lane highway last year. Car needed an alignment, so it was like driving a tin shed in a tornado.

I went 155 on my 85 fz750, 140 in my old 71 GP on the way home from buying it. My old mans 66 cat 389 2.41 rear buried the 120 speedo I was 12 in the back the needle was gone. We blew off a mark IV, 32 years ago & remember like it was yesterday. Dave K.

We know a guy that had a '70 GTO pushing 500 hp, a tremec TKO 5 speed, and 3:55 gears out back. He showed us pics he took while driving with one hand....Buried the speedo with ease and had tons left over, we figure he was doing 155 mph or so

I got my 71 T-37 140 speedo to the "K" on the brake light twice. With KYB shocks, a 455 with a comp 280 cam and 2.78 gears will suprise you. We have a 22 mile bridge on I-10 near here. You used to be able to haul-ass on it. But that was back in the day. The car had the origional trans and rear end at the time so the speedo should have been somewhat accurate.

ive gotten my 71 grandprix upto 120 on the way down the shore. well thats atleast what my buddy in his nova said we were doing cause mine didnt work. and that was with 390s and only using overdrive for a couple seconds. i was maxed out in third at id say about 110 ish and as soon as i shifted into overdrive it felt like a whole new car. if i was going 125 i got that last 15 mph in blink of an eye. felt my gut sink it when the gearing dropped. figure with the new motor and 342 gears 150 wont be a problem.

actually after reading my post that makes alot of sense haha. my quickest mph in the 1/4 was 109 and ive never had to use overdrive with the 100 shot of nitrous. that was pretty much at 5800-6000 in 3rd. been faster since but on a 125 shot and i usually have to shift and hope overdrive grabs

When I was a teenager I got my 79 T/A with 403/auto/2.41's up to about 125 (speedo needle was pointing straight down) with 3 friends in the car .... at night.... on a two lane road.

Yes, I was a dumba$$ and frankly looking back i'm surprised that i'm still alive after some of the things I did as a kid. Someone up above was looking after my idiotic self.

I drive like grandpa now LOL.....

Punch I hate that long as bridge LOL no place to turn around :P They need to remove those baricades in the middle and make it a turn around, but of course it would cause major wrecks and pile ups LOL.

'bout the fastest I've been was in my dad's 69 Mustang that had a 351 4V Cleveland with a three speed stick and 3.10 gears.

When I went to college I had it for a short time down there to do some mechanical work to it. My cousin and I were bringing it back and he had a 72 Lemans GT37 at the time with a 400 4bbl. When I finally got by him the speedo needle was pointing straight down which was about 3/4 inch past 120. I remember that the steering was REALLY light at that speed.

Of course this was at night, two lane road on semi-hilly terrain. The things we do when we're young.

Well at least I'm still not driving Fords anymore.

Yea, but at least there`s no crossroads or driveways with people pulling out in front of you at 100 mph plus. My testicular fortitude has decreased somewhat these days.

Fastest I've been is in my buddy's '98 Z28. I stopped at 155 (not my car)...he took it up to 165 (just before the limiter at 167). Not as stable as you'd like, but still fun.

BTW, I'm IN my delinquent teenage years (for another 6 months).

Its not a classic car but.... I did 120 for about 3 hours in my friends Jetta coming back from Mackinaw Island. Talk about a quick trip. I made the mistake of having the window down a bit... I couldn't hear out of that ear for about 5 hours.

NHRA Pro Stock Probe, over 189. Everything else, I plead the fifth. Well, at least I should. 78 GRand Prix, 400 Pontiac built my way, 5600rpm with 275-60/15 tires and 2.41 rear gears. Did I back off when the windshield popped and spiderwebbed? No, I just took my right hand and pushed outward on it for another 3/4 of a mile then eased out of the go pedal. That was fun. Don't know how much higher the rpm may have went after the glass popped, I didn't really have enough eyes to look at the tach ! My first high speed experience was with my 69 Firebird, 455, RA3 cam, 2.73 rear gears. Seen 145mph on the 160 speedo, but the air gettting under the car made me back off, but not enough to stop for the flashinglights WAY back there. Thank God those old 318 Diplomats could barely top 100 in Police car trim!!!

For future reference, as of three years ago, the new Fords will do almost 130 with the square light bars on top, and and almost 140 with a slick top. I do not know what they will do with the new aerodynamic light bars, but I imagine it is somewhere in between. Maybe Tom will give us more up to date information!

I used to have a modified 87 Porsche 944 turbo. I had it up to 160 one time and it was real stable. Had some more left too....that was one fast car I wish I had never sold.
I have a 72 Firebird and 79 T/A ws6, but haven't topped either out yet. Speedo in the Firebird doesn't work anyway.

JYD, That was over 20 years ago. Sixteen year old kids don't always do what they should!

As a 14 year old I remember my father hauling ass on the Adirondack Northway in upstate NY in our 1971 T-37. The 140 mph speedo was recessed so from the passenger seat you could only see the left side, or 0-70. I slid over a little and peeked, but still couldnt see the numbers, slid over a little more, craned my neck, all the while not wanting to be obvious and startle my mother was was sitting in the back seat reading. When I finally saw the needle pointing to around 125 I said Holy Something. Of course then mom looked up and had a canary, dad slowed down, and I was hooked on going ffffast.
