so 1 pint of (EOS) to the 10/30 mobil 1 on a 5qt capacity or use the stp additive in the blue bottle as a second choice, does that sound reasonable?

You can get the 16 oz GM EOS PN 1052367 from GM Parts Direct for $4.53 a bottle. Hot Rod article says to use that for break-in then switch to GM Camshaft and Lifter Pre-lube PN 12345501 ($4.95 for 4 oz bottle)with every oil change to add the needed zinc content for flat tappet lifters. Website below...

In the June 2006 HPP article Pg 72 - 74, it says GM does not recommend using EOS long term. But that is probably because it can harm catalytic converters due to high zinc content.

I plan on using 4 oz of EOS with every oil change of my musclecars. Jim

The Valvoline line of off road or racing oils. has not lowered the amount of Zinc in their oils.

Check and you should find that oils for use without catverter retain their zinc.

Now phosphorus is another thing alltogether.

An oil-related question and this thread deserves a bump anyhow...

I park on a hill. No choice. Should I park nose-up or nose-down? I hear that a Poncho (I have a 69 Catalina 400 mill) oils from the back cylinders to the front ones, so I've been parking nose down to try and keep a little oil up front.

Feedback? Thanks!

Must be a pretty steep hill to be worrying about it. I'd be more worried about uncovering the pickup than anything else, so would want to park nose up.

I am glad I found this post, looks like I am headed to my GM Dealer at lunch to pick up some EOS, or the Cam and Lifter Pre-lube. I am running Castrol 20-50 right now, but I may switch to Rotella on the next oil change.

It will be the 4th in it's short lifetime. I changed the oil right after break-in(10-30), once at 750 miles(15-40), then once at 1,000 miles(15-40), this oil has been in it for about 2500 miles.

Any comments on this frequency of change?

Thanks Guys

This whole Zinc thing has been started by "Green Peace" and the likes of them, It's an invironmental thing and not a catalytic converter thing. The latest oil rating designation "SL" has been added to all oils without phosphorus or zinc addatives to "Save the Environment", it's to save the planet the EPA says - they like to help us. There's a good article about it in this months issue of "Automotive Restorer" magazine in the 'ask the mechanic' area. Go to all the stores that you know of that may still have some old supplies on hand and check to see if they have oil in stock that didn't recieve the "SL" designation - it's the good stuff.
