Cutting Oil Filter open
How would the average guy do it hacksaw?

Hacksaw will create metal filings that will get into the filter. We use a filter cutter which looks like a giant pipe cutter. It has a cutting wheel on it.

Yes I know yet the fillings would be on the outside, but doesn,t the filter work from the inside out?

You'll just have to cut it open and just pull the segments of the filter apart and look in between. I'm sure the hacksaw would work, just may make a mess is all.

Someone on this board said Summit sells an inexpensive tool to do that. I haven't looked. I cut mine with sharp razor blade, just had to be careful. Wasn't much more than cutting an alum. pop can.

I have cut many filters apart using a hacksaw. Yes it is messy. I invert the filter and cut close to the top ridge so the filings don't get into the paper. BTW the oil is filtered from the outside in.

When I cut mine open, I use a wide chisel or putty knive and a hammer to bust open the side. Then, use a pair of tin snips. This way, you don't get stuff in the filter that would skew the inspection of the carnage.

Muffler cut-off tool.
Looks like a chain saw chain on a vise-grip.

I recently purchased the Summit brand filter cutter and wished I had been smart enough to buy it years ago. It does a slick and quick job of removing the can. The tail pipe cutter did an OK job on the heavier filters but would deform and twist up the light weight ones. The filter cutter does a good job regardless of the filter can thickness.

I ran the AC PF24 for years, and always used a utility knife (razor) on those. I finally bought a filter cutter like a year ago, and it is much easier. I think the one I got was a proform? Well, had insight to buy extra cutters for it at the same time....

No, it flows from the outside "inward". The media would baloon if it went the other way. The metal core inside of the media keeps it from collapsing. I bought this one for $40 and it works real well: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/80532/10002/-1 The Aircraft Spruce unit looks nice too.

I have a chain-type exhaust pipe cutter. It works pretty good too.
