Default Effectiveness of Scrapers and Windage Trays

There's been some chatter about crank scrapers and windage trays, and would like to hear other's experience(s) and thoughts. Like, what effect does having a scraper have on performance? Is the main function to just keep oil in the pan? Control parasitic losses? What is the safe distance from the crank a scraper should have? Same questions regarding a windage tray. Mounting soultions? Available types? Are the diamond ones any good?

I've used windage trays in all my builds, and they vary from factory (full and 2/3rds) , Milidon, and PPR. The general clearance I've used on those trays is 3/16ths, and it's usually a rod throw-to windage louver where the close spots are.

My general thoughts on scrapers and trays is that the most useful function is to keep the oil in the pan, and any parasitic gains are a bonus. My guess is that, depending on the engine, one may see roughly 10 or so HP gain from control of parasitic loss due to a tray and/or scraper. What do you guys think?

I know Dave at SD Performance told me they have documented approximately 10 hp gains on the dyno when using a windage tray AND crank scraper combo on a 455. Much less for either when used alone. But 10 hp is 10 hp.

Sporter - How many miles have you put on that 4L80E? What's your experience there?

Yeah, I've heard that it's about 10HP gain, though wasn't sure if it was for each or combined, thanks for pointing that out.

Wonder what the accepted clearances are on scrapers and trays?
