Best Oil for Engine
I did a forum search, but couldn't find what I was looking for. My 440 Pontiac rebuild is finished. I upgraded to KRE 305s from my #62s. It runs a solid roller cam. I would like suggestions on what oil / vicosity to run on break-in and ultimately on the street. Thank you for your time

I'll throw my 2 cents in since I chased this same question around awhile back. I decided on Brad Penn 10w40. http://www.bradpennracing.com/Produc...SAE-10W40.aspx

Must not have looked/read very much as this has been beat to death in the past.

Good luck to the new owner of the Ventura II! Sold the car after 13+ years. Look for it on the Hot Rod Power Tour in the future as it's currently being re-configured as a Pro-Touring ride! |

Since he's running a roller cam, he doesn't have to be concerned about the amount of zddp in the oil like the old style flat tappet cams.

True that there's less of a requirement/precaution for roller over flat tappet, though in my mind, it can't hurt either. I like the Valvoline Racing, though it does require a slightly more frequent change since I believe it doesn't have all the stabilizers 'regular' street oils have (could be wrong, but I change frequent anyway).
As for break in weight, I say thin, so it circulates and coats quickly, like 10-30. As for what to run after break in, it depends on your clearances. Loose you go a little thicker, tight, thinner. Summer, thicker, winter, thinner. I say start with 10-40, and see how your hot idle pressure is and adjust from there. .
