It depends, ram air or not? That tube is a ram air one, and will only work with a ram air engine harness. It mounts to the front of the driver head and the harness wraps under to the starter from the front. Non-ram air cars used a straight tube that went between exhaust ports # 5 & #7. Or at least that's the way I remember it!

That's not a RA tube. It's a stock later model tube. I had one on both my 73 350 and 74 400 engines that came out of catlina's and bonnevilles. It mounts on the back of the driver side head (and a much smarter routing than the straight tube on the 68-71's that runs down between the exhaust manifold and the head.

The ram air ones are shorter? Or more curved?

HO's and non HO cars are different. My T-37 had the wrong tube from the factory and it shorted out about 2 days after I got the car. Central Pontiac in Seattle fixed it and I was on my way.
Mechanic and his supervisor both stated it strange that it had the wrong one on it and had never seen another car like mine. Never had a problem after that. Now gotta get one of the correct ones. HO's are longer than non HO cars. Don't think RA had anything to do with it as it near the exhaust manifold and if memory serves me right (after all it has been 40 years next month) the tube goes between block and exhaust manifold.

No tube on my 71 455.. I was told that 455 didn't come with one. The wiring runs to the front of the motor, along the oilpan, then comes up to the battery

I can't speak with certainty on the 71/72 RA cars but the 69/70 RA tubes were on the motor mounts and were straight tubes. The starter cable ran down across the steering gearbox and then under the motor to the starter. I don't remember what my 72 had whether it was the 71 and back style through the gap on the manifold to block on the standard manifolds, but the 73/74 motors had this curved one on the back of the drivers head. I think I used it on my 69 RA car just to put the solenoid wiring down to the starter and keep it clear of the 4 spd linkages.

Hm, guess that's what I was thinking of on the RA/HO cars, just thought there was supposed to be a tube. So much for my memory working correctly!

When I modified my harness, I used one of the ones that mounts to the back of the driver's head, since I put a ford sol on the firewall behind the booster. Like I mentioned somewhere, I collected all the tubes I could find while in the bone yards, use them as I need them.
