Because you get more than just the engine. Most of the 455 cars were 'option laden' (A/C, power this and that, etc...) and of course all of them had the 12 bolt out back (as previously mentioned). Actually, for the GTO (IIRC), there were 1761 455/4spd, and 1986 455/auto cars in 1970.

302, 455s were built with the 601 code and the 4 speed.

Okay, you're narrowing it to the Ram Air optioned 455's. I thought the OP was simply asking about any 455 vs 400 for price difference.

The car I'm interested in is an automatic, 455, with a/c that came up for sale recently. It's an original low mileage car and is in very good, unrestored, condition. It has had one color change. I've got a good feel for the value of a comparable base 400, but this car is priced several thousand higher. Just wondering if the 455 justifies the higher price.

I would think that up to about 25 percent is not out of the norm. As mentioned you also get a 12 bolt besides just the 455. The rest boils down to color and options, having air is for most anyhow a good add.

I prefer a musclecar with no a/c. Yes I don't live in the heat constantly but the car is only occasional anyway. I don't like the extra weight and all that crap cluttering up the place under the hood.
