Default Best bang for the buck exhaust system

Ok so cornfused about this.

Back in my younger years it was duals with flowmaster 3 chambers.

Then came the H pipe setup with flowmasters

Now I heard about X pipe setup with all different mufflers.

Here info on my motor
389
Cast iron 4 bbl intake
068 cam
Punched .030
9.5-1 CR estimated
4 speed transmission
3.64 9.3 rear end

So what’s the buzz on exhausts

I like a mean sounding exhaust note at idle.

Sounds like a 2.5” Magnaflow with an ‘X’ would be darned near perfect for your combo. Maybe step up the the 3” if you were running a 455 or a striker motor with 460+ cubes.

Jeff,

Check my signature for RA manifolds, Pypes X and their Race Pro mufflers.

Best for the buck is going to be buying whatever mufflers you want and maybe a mandrel x pipe then just taking it to an exhaust shop. Some have mentioned good results with “bolt in” systems but plenty more fight with them for a day only to take it to a shop anyway.

A couple here have used the "X" pipe, and later went to the "H" pipe because it was quieter...

"mean sounding at idle" and "bang for the buck"..... I would do 2.5" straight with your favorite economical mufflers, maybe something like Summit's turbo's? Alabama's pretty relaxed with regulations so I doubt they have vehicle inspections, you can just run the pipes up over the rearend and leave it at that. A high rpm engine might benefit from an X or H pipe but on a normal street car, your butt wouldn't notice. It's be easy to install and any universal kit would work.

There is such a thing as cheap mufflers and expensive mufflers.
Lots of "jobber mufflers" are one muffler fits all with 2", 2.25" 2.5 in and outlet only and when you look into the muffler it is about a 1.5" opening in and out.
Chambered mufflers are my favorite, I love the tin can sound, thats just me. If I would ever grow up and get past that I would only run "Dynomax Super turbos".
In your case with manifolds I would by the "Pypes down pipes" and take them to a custom exhaust shop and have them build an exhaust system with them and your flavor of mufflers.
Now just my pet peeve with just a cruising car like I have I just run two separate pipes so if an engine problem arise I could hear what side of the engine has a problem.

I prefer the "stereo" sound of two separate pipes (no stereo in dash).
I have found the X-pipes sounds like pushing in the mono button, so to speak.

It's funny how we wall like different things. I prefer the sound of an X. Just makes for a smoother sound at higher RPMs. I do like the chambered muffler sound at idle but I also really like the sound of ponchjoe's setup in his video.

I love the way my Formula with an X and Flowmasters sounds though I know it's not the best flowing system.

On my 461, I'm running the Ram Air Restoration d-port manifolds with a 2.5 inch system designed by Ram Air Restoration, which includes an x-pipe, and Spin Tech 16" case mufflers. 041 cam. Sounds great at idle and WOT, and was reasonably priced, but there is quite a bit of drone at cruise speed on the freeway.

Find the local performance muffler shop and use them. It'll be worlds cheaper than a mail order kit that may or may not fit properly.

The best bang for the buck is a 3" dual system with H-pipe about 18" behind the collectors. I really like the sound of magnaflow 14" mufflers. Mine is dumped in front of the rear axle, but that makes it louder. You could reduce pipe size to 2.5" after the mufflers to go up and over the rear and out the back. That'll quiet down the resonance inside the car.

Here is a vid of what my car sounded like with the 400 and XE274 cam and the exhaust I describe above. Man it gets me stoked to finish the 434!

Decided to go with the Rare complete system with the spintech 13” mufflers and over the rear axle and out the back.

Thanks to all the feedback.

It is wild to see everyone has a different ear for the sounds of their cars. And that’s good cause as I always say if everyone liked the same thing this world would be boring!!

I pulled my Hush Powers for Super Turbos.IMO the ST are a little more quiet at idle but are louder at highway speeds. Was not a good switch after the fact.FWIW,Tom

Tom, did you buy an H-pipe system or an h-pipe and build it yourself. And if so, what kit or where did you source your parts?

I just had it done at my local muffler shop. The X pipe system was done at a high end shop in Downey.I asked for a H system and when I picked up the car it had the X.Pissed me off, drove it for a couple weeks and hated it.Had it pulled off and did the H.2 1/2 system from longbranch over the axles. My neighbor complained a little about my HushPowers so I took them off and put on the SuperTurbos. As I said bad move on my car.Tom
