You MUST get the hook end installed correctly or the hook will straighten out. If you look closely the hook must go in the slot and back out the other side again fully. If it does not it will pull loose. My original straps have the holes for a sheet metal screw to hold the hook closed but they were never used. If it makes you more comfortable by all means put screws in.

Hey racer
The hooks were installed fully, my father in law and i installed it,really tight getting the carriage bolts in, but then double checked the hooks to be sure. I think if we had bent the hook closed some it might have helped but the new ones will be screwed.

These new strap ends are not tempered Steel as they need to be!
The only cure is to clamp the fold together with a sheet metal screw or a flat head button machine screw installed with the stud end facing down .

Where was the repop tank straps bought from?

The real fix is to get these repop straps off the market. Someone is going to have a really bad fireball following them someday when theirs fails.... and I don't mean the members on these forums. Think of the others that know nothing about this.

Instead of buying from the catalogs go to NAPA and get them. But ask if theirs are reproductions, or the real deal, and stainless. Stay away from PepBoys, Auto Zone, and others like them.

Best and smartest thing is to do as Schurkey says and report this to DOT and the NTSB. The latter would be the best start. I can smell one hell of a lawsuit coming someday.

If you installed them so the hook was ALL the way through the second slot you should be able to hang your engine on the strap and not pull it out. If the straps are such poor quality steel that they straighten and pull through then by all means get them off the market.

Yep, the hook will fit two ways. One way allows the hook to straighten out and the other has the strap locked solid where it won't straighten out. If you slide the hook in and the end disappears into the bodywork it is installed wrong. The strap should be installed with the hook end facing straight down after going around the bolt so that when the strap is swung back and placed on the tank the end is still fully visible and will be bent in a tighter arc. If done correctly the only way the strap will come loose is if it breaks.

Of the four 67's (ok, three since one has a fuel cell) I owned none came with sheet metal screws, and the replacement tanks and straps haven't needed screws. I've got a mile of dirt washboard road and none of my tanks have fallen out.

The straps are new but about 12-13 years old. I have no idea where they came from, could be PY, Rockauto or NAPA.
If you have aftermarket straps and you dont put a screw in them, as the GM service manual tells you to you are foolish. If i had read the manual you bet your ass i would have installed the screws.
I posted this so it would allow others not to have to go thru what i am going thru, and hopefully this will help some.
Thanks all

Hey guys.
So i got my new straps and what a difference. The old strap is folded over at the hook end but only has about 1" below hook and not welded. The new is folded over with about 2" below and has 4 spot welds in it. Also appear to be about twice as thick. Still getting screwed but big difference. New straps are Spectra from Rockauto.

Yet another reason not to use Chiwanese parts. These parts are out there in NOS.

Hm. I would think the end of the strap would stick out further? Some reason I thought the end would be long enough so even without the screw it wouldn't be able to 'open up' in the body mount?

Those straps don't stick through anywhere near as far as my original ones. No wonder you can't pull out factory ones.

Never heard of this issue at all. I've got to check mine now...

I feel your pain. I have the same issue. Really cuts down on how much I drive my '68. Just don't feel like dealing with the dust in every nook of the car.

i checked on NOS ones on ebay and they match the first replacement that i used that failed. The factory service manual says to add a screw to replacements, so...

This is what I was trying to point out. When they are long enough, and the open end sticks thru past the opening enough, it can't unfold.
