A body frame boxing/bracing - necessary?
....if you’re fitting a typical welded 6pt cage or is it just unnecessary weight? A cage is mandatory at any respectable ET these days, so that’s a given; but is there any benefit to having both a cage & boxing the frame? Anyone done both?
I’m thinking that the cage would add more stiffness than adding extra plates to the frame on the same/existing plane(s)? Feel free to educate me! Thanks in advance. |

On a cage the frame has to be boxed where the bar meets the frame to pass tech and be certified. On a 6 point roll bar not needed but will help stiffen the frame.

You might as well just box the frame. I just finished boxing my frame this past weekend, making all of the plates myself from scratch. Took some time to fit everything, but it was cheap and relatively easy.

Thanks! I'm a novice welder, so it was a fun learning experience. Cost was about $80 for the raw materials, versus over $300 for the premade kits available that no doubt require nearly as much time to dial in the fitment. Money well saved, IMO.

I boxed 6" of the frame with 1/8" plate where ever the bars were welded to the frame

Just find a same-year factory CONVERTIBLE A-body frame - they're already boxed!
But they're probably a little heavier........

So I’m guessing you did that all with the body in place? I have to patch the floor so I figured I’d cut the floor out and do any boxing at that time, then weld in the new floor & build the roll bar or cage - unsure at this time exactly how far I’ll go with the bar/cage - dash is out so... I’ve seen some really tight fitting cages lately with removable bars and rear seat in place, can barely see them from the side.

Yes I did the boxing with only a 6" x 6" hole in the floor pan, it gave me pretty easy access.
I bought bars that go thru the package tray and still retain my rear seat for looks. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Also I did all the fitting and notching myself. Now I see why shops quoted me 1500- 2k for installation took along time to get it all fit, especially the swing out door bars. I got swing outs cause it's still mostly a street car

That's some nice work! I would wear some long sleeve when your doing TIG welding. That is not good for your skin even though there is no spark scatter like a MIG. Great job!
