Oil filter cutter
After the failure of my last engine, i want to purchase an oil filter cutter to keep an eye on my new investment. I'm looking at getting the Proform 66490 oil filter cutter. Before I pull the trigger i figured I'd first see what you're all using and recommend.

I've used the Summit Racing cutter for years and it's only about 2/3 the cost of the Proform: Summit Oil Filter Cutter

Yep, they all function the same. I'd buy what ever fits your budget. The Summit cutter mentioned works just fine.

I bought a large pipe cutter at a flea market for 20 bucks. Its heavy as hell but I put it in a vise and just spin the filter. Works for me.

Just curious as to how often (how many miles) you plan on inspecting your filters?

I just ordered the first one you linked, looks like it'll do the job. Quote:
I'll be putting my new engine on the run stand as soon as i get my distributor back so i plan on opening that filter up. Otherwise I change the oil once a year in my car so injust plan on opening the filter up each time.

I have the ProForm one, and I cut my filters open every oil change, or at least every other oil change.
Once you get past about 3-5k miles, it's probably a waste of time, unless you have reason to suspect some type of damage. But I still do it regardless. If you have some type of 'damage' occur after say 5k miles, you will know, and not really need to cut it open unless you feel the need. Whatever obvious damage there is, will most likely be easy to figure out where the failure was. .

I think I might make my own. Order a cutter wheel for $10 and I think I could whip one out in an hour. I have more time than money
