Holley EFI Tuners Thread, List Who Can Tune A Pontiac
I couldn't find anything on the board in a search, I think it's a good idea to have a thread that has Holley HP, Dominator and Terminator X tuners that know our cars and members give the thumbs up too.
Shop and Location? Tuner? Your Holley System? Your Engine? Review of tuner and tune?

Another post that would land well in a dedicated efi section...
With regards to the tuning, anyone who's well versed in tuning the Holley products will do well on your Pontiac. These products don't know what brand engine they're on. The Tuner if good, will find the power, and address the drive ability issues.

This isn't what the tuners are telling me, they actually don't want to touch it unless it's an engine they're confident and have experience with. Just talked to a Chevy guy and a Ford guy, nope.
EFI section would be more relevant every year on here.

Efi tuning is pretty universal. Tuning a inline 4 cylinder or a 500 cubic inch V8 is the same process.

72 Project Bird, you have a Holley EFI system?
You ever tuned an import? I have both, not the same. Would the fuel map for my 91 Talon simply carry over into my GTO? What about if I have inputs for Holley oil and ethanol sensors, those easily move from Holley version 4 to version 5 Holley = NOPE. Local tuners are afraid of issues, it's that simple, no one wants trouble from their tuning. Only the real pros will tackle all platforms with confidence, the rest are just amateurs that will take your money and screw things up. Point of thread, who's out there and good for Pontiac members.

Obviously the maps are going to be different. Nobody said they would be the same. It's how you get to the perfect map that's the same. Essentially it all breaks down to mathematics. Once you start playing around with tuning software (of any manufacturer) you start reading it like a book. You go through the chapters, making adjustments and calculations based on the information you have in front of you. The make of the engine never crosses my mind.

If you're running into tuners that are afraid to tune your Holley just because it's on a Pontiac engine, run far away and find another tuner. We have the Holley system on dad's 571 ci Pontiac that makes 724 hp, and another on my 454 Chevelle that makes 600 hp. 2 completely different engines in 2 completely different HP zip codes. I tune them both and honestly there isn't a whole bunch of difference between the 2. They both like about the same WOT AFR, they both like very similar timing curves, they both like to idle about 850 rpm, and the fuel maps on both look very similar in their curves with the only difference being the 571 is a little more thirsty. I even work on my neighbors 57 t-bird with a FAST EFI setup on it, and that's an old Y-block of all things LOL How many Y-blocks do you see with EFI on them??? It works perfectly and very easy to tune. I just got done with that one a couple weeks ago. Last edited by Formulajones; 06-25-2021 at 01:56 PM. |

When it comes to the principles of EFI tuning, specifically how is a Pontiac engine different than anything else such as a SBC, BBC, Ford, Mopar, etc.? They're all just air pumps with valves that open and close. There is nothing unique about them in this regard, which is why you don't need to be a Pontiac specialist to tune a carb on a Pontiac, either.
If you're talking about building a Pontiac engine, then yes, it does help to have a marque specialist in that case. But for tuning, there is nothing different about them. If you're hearing differently, then you're either contacting unqualified shops, or they are busy and looking for excuses to not work on your project, or there is more to the story that we don't know.
