Need 30% gloss black paint for firewall
Anyone know of a rattle can spray paint that is 30% gloss? If nothing in a can like that is available, how about auto paint that I can use with a spray gun? Don't care about the brand name, just the result of an original factory look.

Try the Eastwood site. They have what you need. I used their 2K rattle can and it worked great.

I used quarts of Rustoleum gloss black and flat black mixed to achieve what gloss I wanted. Reduce it and shoot it out of a gun.

Another option is BASF's R-M SC804 premixed matte black single stage.
Sold in 1L cans (quart). Quite expensive, but durable and nice to spray. I love this stuff. The biggest drawback is activator is only available in quarts and also very expensive, so unless you are spraying other R-M single stage it will be costly to get ready to spray. (1 quart of activator is enough for 4 L or quarts of paint).

Duplicolor DA 1603. Started using it after reading this Camaro restoration Guide as application and touch ups are easy! https://www.chevydiy.com/how-to-pain...oration-guide/

Go to an auto paint store and have it mixed up.

I just used Eastwood Rust Encapsulator in aerosol can as the top coat for my firewall. Looks great, and has a slightly less gloss than the inner fenders, etc. as they were from the factory. Plus, it can be touched up very easily in the future if ever needed.

I found that Krylons semi-flat black was really close to the original firewall color on my 69 Gto I used to own

This car is undergoing a CONCOURS restoration. Points matter.

If you're shooting for concours points and want to use aerosol paint for the firewall, just buy a few test cans of different products to find the finish you are trying to achieve. Any unused paint will eventually get used around the house.

Thanks everyone! Just found out Eastwood makes a black chassis paint (satin coating) that dries to 25-30% gloss. Just ordered some and will give it a try. I don't mind experimenting at this stage. These firewalls are really ugly with dimples, spot welds, sloppy seam sealer, etc. The shine (even 30% gloss) makes all these imperfections show up even worse, but I want it to be close to factory 'look' as possible. https://www.ebay.com/itm/37324283804...8AAOSwAXBhA7R4

I used the same thing only I used straight gloss reduced with acetone.lt really isn't all that glossy and tones down even more with a little time.

Pick up a qt of John Deere semi-gloss . Mixes like acrylic enamel. Really like the finished look and very inexpensive.

I chimed in once before about Eastwood. I just got a can of the 2K underhood low gloss black. It's great for the firewall and the low gloss part of the dash. Very similar to the firewall in the pic above.

Call me crazy but I used black primer and semi-gloss clear on top. Level of gloss increases the more clear coats are applied so I just stopped when I was satisfied.

Thanks to all for responding. I recommend the Eastwood product. Really easy to use but does have overspray so be sure to cover up anything you don't won't painted! |
