Sounds like Dynamic Braking? I retired from the transit system here that used both DC and later AC electric power. They used dynamic braking which basically turns the motor into a generator when the 'throttle' is set to zero. The weight of the vehicle drives the generator and naturally slows the car. In some cases the power generated is sent back to it's source to be used. In other cases it's run through a large resistor grid and disposed of as heat.
Sounds like they are incorporating that feature into recharging the batteries.

Yes, I think most EVs and hybrids have some form of dynamic braking these days.

The Jeep is selectable. In the Max mode, regenerative braking starts as soon as you let off the throttle (which sounds pretty annoying since you can't coast). We selected the mode where regenerative braking is used but not until you lay on the brake pedal.

A little more info:

Long story...we tore apart the laundry room to get a new washer and dryer in. Lots of junk in the garage temporarily so the Jeep has been parked outside for 3 days without being plugged in. It runs fine on gas.

I did notice last night that while running on the gas engine, it is doing some recharging on the propulsion battery. As I mentioned before, it's programmed to use electric to get underway from a standing start and then the gas engine kicks in. So it's trying to keep at least 1% charge on the battery to enable this.

And to be clear, I am neither a proponent or a detractor for the plug-in hybrid concept. I'm just an open-minded guy who is putting out unbiased technical info (based on real experience) so that others can make informed decisions. It's a bit of a lifestyle choice and the same answer isn't right for everybody.

Approx. $62 k minus supplier discount minus $7500 tax credit.
