The Sealed Power OE replacement one, but I lapped the ones that came with them in.

Yep, the stock balls out of OE stamped rockers actually fit better than the balls supplied by Comp, and no grooves so you aren't losing all the oil.

One more question...I have installed them, a while back really, but haven't run them as the engine is still on the stand. As I recall, they had crimp nuts. Will those have to be replaced if I take them back off to do the lapping?

You can re-do the crimp if needed. Put the top of the nut in a vice, tighten it up a little if needed. The other type of lock nuts can also be tightened up by using a center punch.

Are the nuts still stiff to turn? If so...they're fine.

If the stiffness is reduced (less torque to turn them) then there's a problem.

Yeah, they should still be pretty tight but will check when I get back to that project. Thanks for the info.

I used those rockers in a 455 engine that I installed in a 1961 Bonneville 2 door hardtop.. NEVER had a noise issue with them. My personal opinion is use them. I think you will be quite happy. The roller tips definitely allow a bit higher RPM and certainly less wear on the valve stems. Butler also did the heads I used. That engine would wind up to 7 grand very quickly. However, I must tell you that I used a 400 block bored .030 over and a modified 455 crank that was machined to go into the 400 block. The machining reduced the weight by about 7 lbs. and was the main reason it would crank to 7 grand. I also ran an Offenhauser single plane intake with dual Carter AFBs set up with progressive linkage of my own design. Good luck with your build!

They are noisy on my 455. Not sure why. I don’t think they’re supposed to be noisy if rocker geometry and lifter preload is all set correct.

Some have had noise others say their’s are not noisy. Why?

Called Comp tech support. Despite numerous posts on several car forums about them being noisy, they had no idea. The tech wasn’t too thrilled to hear my complaint and proceeded to blame other things. It’s possible the rods are the correct length to setup good rocker geometry or the preload is off. I’ll be looking into that. I did take one off and the only thing I noticed was the ball fulcrum had heat marks on it.

Could they possibly be contacting the valve covers?

Previous owner of my car had roller tip rockers with stock valve covers and I found that they were hitting the valve covers enough to put little dents in the valve covers.

Camshaft selection also plays a role in noise…..what cam are you running?
