I did run my street Pontiac 461 over 7k RPM, regularly, but that's not the topic at hand.

We are talking about .006 here, not .030 or something. If you tell a machine shop that you measured it and you want him to do it over because it's not zero, they are going to look at you like you're from the moon.

You do realize it requires a mock-up to determine the actual deck height right? Then dis-assemble, machine, and another mock-up. Most machine shops allow for a + or - .005, and that's what they will tell you, it's in spec. And if you tell them you want it dead-nuts on zero, or any specific number, you will be charged for it.

Most people don't have the appropriate tools to properly measure deck height anyway, so most won't even know. You might be able to get within .003 or so, one way or the other, but that's about it.

Like I suggested to the original poster, ask the machinist.

Ok so I got the quench solved. I will have Len mock it up with the new crank, rods and pistons. If it is more than .005 or .006 in the hole then $150 to re deck it is. Now to the compression question 85 cc heads gives me 10.3. Should I have the heads milled for a little more compression, or use different pistons with 74 cc? I sent an email to Dave at SD but have not got a response yet.

10.3 is plenty of compression. You're not building a heads up racer. No reason to push the limits, for a pump gas street or street / strip build. IMO

After all, how much more power would the engine make @ 10.5 SCR, than @ 10.3 SCR.

But, if absolute max power is the goal, then push the SCR to the max, go with High Port heads, bigger cam, Victor intake, Dominator carb, more gear, more stall, etc, etc. Hey, there are LOTS of possibilities. Guys have different goals with engine builds.

I believe they can do initial measurements and get the numbers to cut, a rotating kit is going to need machine work anyway. But it they mock it up, there's additional fees aside from cutting the deck, just so you're aware.

On the SCR, depends which rotating assembly you get. You can do stock stroke, but for the same money you can get a 4.25 or 4.50 stroke. Makes sense to go bigger, and you need to know stroke to calc SCR.

If you talk to Dave (better to call by the way) when you buy the heads, tell him the kind of driving and intent of build, and he can recommend the best SCR, stroke, cam, etc for the build.

In general, it's common to be in the 10.75-11.25 range with aluminum heads.

Block is at Len's he said he will mock it up and take it to zero deck. I found a 4.25 stroke forged crank 6.8 rod and Icon piston set up. This gives me a little better rod to stroke ratio and the 4.185 bore will allow him to hone .004 out to get the bore inshape. the 467.8 CI gives me 10.75 CR which should be pretty good for the old faithful cam. I currently have 1.5 full roller rockers. the cam specs on Sd's web site say .578 lift at 1.52 are most running 1.65 ratio?

I would try it with the RA4 cam if you have it. You are going to be impressed with the SD KREs. I was going to go with the OF too but decided to save same bucks and leave my cam in. I'm glad I did as the performance increase from the heads alone was more than I expected. I definately needed to install a rev limiter.

Do you run a 1.65:1 Rocker with that cam? The lobe lift seems small..............Otherwise I really like that 60310....

I run my E-heads with a RAIV cam (Crane blue print) with comp 1.65 roller tip rockers Eagle forged H-beam rods SRP forged pistons Performer RPM intake & a Q-jet.This is a 455 +.60 over engine. This is in my 73 GTO . best time has been 11.72 @ 119 mph. I love the RAIV cam & have used it in the last 4 455 builds I've had . The RAIV cam was a great cam when the designed it & still is.

I run 1.6 Crower Endro rockers. I picked the 60310 for my 400, but got a good deal on a 455. Turns out that I'm pretty happy with it.

While I am waiting on the machine work to be finished I am looking at replacing the original pulleys and brackets. looking at CVF. with my set up (3.42 with a .7 O.D. continental 10" converter 2300 rpm on the highway and a max of 5800 on the track. what would you reccomend the 8" crank pulley or the 6.2" pulley matched to a 6.2" water pump pulley. My current stock pulleys are 8" and 6-5/8
they are badly pitted and the brackets are not keeping the alignment as good as should.
